Hardik Pandya Faces Scrutiny After MI’s Poor Run in IPL 2026 Amid Playoff Pressure

Mumbai Indians’ struggles in IPL 2026 have placed captain Hardik Pandya under renewed scrutiny, with the franchise enduring a difficult campaign marked by inconsistent performances and mounting pressure in the playoff race.

Despite being an IPL-winning captain—an achievement shared by only a select few in Indian cricket—Pandya’s second stint as MI skipper has not gone as planned. After taking over leadership duties in a controversial transition, he faced early backlash from sections of fans following the replacement of long-time captain Rohit Sharma.

Mixed Results Across Seasons

Mumbai Indians showed signs of recovery in IPL 2025 by reaching the playoffs, but they fell short of making it to the final. However, IPL 2026 has proven far more challenging, with the five-time champions losing six out of their first eight matches.

With their playoff hopes now hanging by a thread, MI are in a must-win situation, where even winning all remaining games may not guarantee qualification.

Expert Concerns Over Captaincy

Former Zimbabwe cricketer Mpumelelo Mbangwa raised concerns about Pandya’s leadership during a discussion on Cricbuzz, suggesting that MI may need to reassess their captaincy direction.

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull also weighed in on the debate, questioning whether the franchise should retain Pandya as captain ahead of the next mega auction.

“If they are going to change something, who is going to be the captain next year? If it is not going to be Hardik Pandya, release him,” Doull said, adding that leadership uncertainty could impact both the player and the team structure.

He further noted that while Pandya is one of the premier white-ball all-rounders when fully fit, the pressure of captaincy in a struggling side could either free him up or further affect his performance.

Underwhelming Individual Season

Individually, Pandya has also struggled to make a strong impact in IPL 2026. In seven matches, he has scored 128 runs at a strike rate of 152.38 and taken four wickets, numbers that reflect inconsistency in both departments.

Team Struggles and Bowling Concerns

Mumbai Indians’ issues have extended beyond leadership, with bowling being a key area of concern. In a recent high-scoring match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, MI posted a massive 243/5 but still ended up on the losing side, as their bowlers failed to defend the total.

Even ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah had an off day, conceding 54 runs without taking a wicket, further highlighting the team’s struggles.

Pandya’s Response

Following the defeat, Pandya acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and admitted that MI are falling short of their traditional standards.

“I think this season we don’t have much option, we really need to see what all differences we can do. I won’t put my bowlers under the bus,” he said, adding that the team as a unit has not performed to Mumbai Indians’ expectations.

Playoff Pressure Builds

With just a few matches remaining, MI’s campaign now hangs by a thread. The franchise not only needs a strong finish but also favourable results elsewhere to stay alive in the playoff race.

For Pandya, the coming games could prove crucial—not just for Mumbai Indians’ season, but also for the long-term direction of his captaincy tenure.
