Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya revealed he was left “dizzy” during his side’s commanding 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, as emotions ran high in a must-win clash that revived MI’s faltering season.
After losing four of their first five matches, Mumbai Indians entered the contest under immense pressure, knowing another defeat could derail their campaign. However, the five-time champions responded in trademark fashion, producing a dominant all-round performance in Ahmedabad to stun Gujarat Titans.
Batting first, MI posted a formidable 199/5, driven by a sensational maiden IPL century from Tilak Varma. The young batter initially struggled for rhythm but flipped the script after a fiery mid-innings push, eventually finishing unbeaten on 101 off just 45 deliveries.
Pandya admitted that his animated involvement from the dugout was triggered by the pressure of the situation and the importance of the match.
“And yeah, I think a couple of times I went so loud that I kind of got dizzy,” Pandya said after the match. “But it was much needed for the group, for Tilak, and for Mumbai Indians. As a captain, that kind of energy only changes things around.”
His intensity was visible throughout the innings, especially during Tilak Varma’s slow start, where the batter managed just 19 off 22 balls. Pandya was seen having an intense exchange with him during a strategic break, urging him to trust his natural game. The message worked instantly, as Tilak exploded with 82 runs off the next 23 balls.
“I kept telling him to just watch the ball and hit it. The kind of ball travel he generates is very special,” Pandya explained.
Chasing 200, Gujarat Titans never recovered from early blows. A first-ball wicket by Jasprit Bumrah set the tone, and MI’s bowling attack maintained relentless pressure. Ashwani Kumar delivered a career-defining spell of 4/24, while Mitchell Santner chipped in with 2/16, dismantling GT’s middle order.
Gujarat were eventually bowled out for just 100 in 15.5 overs, suffering one of their heaviest defeats in franchise history. Their batting collapse once again exposed concerns over their middle-order depth, as they failed to build partnerships under pressure.
For Mumbai Indians, the emphatic win not only ended their losing streak but also significantly improved their net run rate, lifting them to seventh place on the points table. More importantly, it reignited their campaign at a crucial stage of the season, with momentum firmly back on their side.
