Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa has stepped forward to support families affected by the devastating floods in Assam. The singer has partnered with the Sikh Aid Foundation to help build 35 permanent, flood-resistant homes for families in some of the worst-affected areas of Upper Assam.
As part of the initiative, Guru has contributed ₹7 lakh towards the construction project. The homes are planned across Sivasagar, Jorhat and Nepali Khuti, with the aim of giving flood-hit families safer and more stable places to live instead of temporary shelters.
The initiative comes at a difficult time for many communities in Assam, where flooding has disrupted lives, damaged homes and left families struggling for basic necessities. By supporting permanent housing, the relief effort is looking beyond immediate aid and focusing on long-term rehabilitation.
Guru’s involvement also builds on his earlier contribution to Assam flood relief. He had previously donated ₹5 lakh to the Hello Life Foundation, which helped provide essential supplies, including food, clothing and medical assistance, to people displaced by the floods.
His latest contribution has also placed him among several celebrities and public figures who have extended support to the state. Actors including Bhumi Pednekar, Randeep Hooda and Salman Khan, along with digital creators such as Fukra Insaan and Triggered Insaan, have also been involved in efforts to assist communities affected by the floods.
The partnership with Sikh Aid Foundation is particularly focused on helping families rebuild their lives. Flood-proof housing can provide a greater sense of security to people who have repeatedly faced the destruction caused by seasonal flooding.
For Guru, the relief initiative comes amid a very different kind of conversation surrounding his name. The singer has recently faced heavy criticism over his latest song Fine Shyt. Released on August 6, the track and its music video sparked debate online, with some viewers accusing the song of promoting misogynistic imagery and objectifying women in a workplace setting.
Guru has responded to the criticism in a light-hearted manner, asking people to “calm down” and describing the phrase in the song as “a silly little slang.” Despite the online controversy, he has continued with his professional commitments as well as his humanitarian work.
Before addressing the backlash, Guru had also visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He shared a photograph from the spiritual visit and posted a message about faith, strength and continuing to move forward despite difficult circumstances.
His latest Assam initiative, however, has shifted attention towards his charitable side. While donations can provide immediate relief, the decision to support permanent homes could have a longer-lasting impact on families who have lost their houses to flooding.
The construction of 35 homes may be only one part of the larger rehabilitation effort needed in Assam, but for the families who receive them, it could mean a fresh start after an extremely difficult period.
