Morning peak-hour operations on Mumbai’s Central Line were briefly disrupted on Tuesday after a coach of an empty local train derailed near Dombivli Railway Station at around 8:09 am, triggering concern among daily commuters but fortunately causing no injuries.
According to preliminary information, the rake was not carrying passengers and was being moved as a non-revenue service from Kalwa Car Shed towards Kalyan Junction railway station when one of its coaches derailed. The incident occurred on a key stretch of the Mumbai Suburban Railway Central Line, which handles massive daily passenger traffic during morning rush hours.
Eyewitnesses and commuters reported minor delays and temporary train bunching on both up and down slow lines as rail traffic was regulated to ensure safety. Railway authorities quickly rushed maintenance and rescue teams to the spot, cordoned off the affected section, and began restoration work to re-align the derailed coach.
Officials confirmed that since the train was empty, there was no risk to passenger safety. However, the incident led to short-term operational adjustments, including controlled train movement and platform regulation at nearby stations to manage congestion.
Preliminary assessments suggest a possible technical or track-related issue, though a detailed inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Engineers are expected to inspect both the rolling stock and the track alignment as part of the investigation.
Normal services were gradually restored after swift intervention by railway staff, minimizing the impact on commuters. The Central Railway administration has assured that further safety checks will be conducted to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Despite the brief disruption, suburban train services returned to normal within a short period, highlighting the rapid response mechanism of Mumbai’s busy railway network, which carries millions of passengers daily.
