Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a major setback in their ongoing campaign as fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League due to a quadriceps injury.
Ahmed, who featured in all five matches for CSK this season, reportedly experienced discomfort in his right hip during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14. Subsequent medical assessments revealed a Grade 2 tear, with recovery expected to take between 10 to 12 weeks, according to an IPL source.
The left-arm pacer, who has previously represented India in 11 ODIs and 18 T20Is, was one of CSK’s more consistent performers in the early phase of the tournament. His absence is expected to be a significant blow to the team’s bowling attack at a crucial stage of the competition.
The injury comes at a time when CSK are already navigating a transitional phase in the tournament. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad recently acknowledged that the team is beginning to find its rhythm after back-to-back wins, including a 32-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gaikwad noted that the team’s understanding of roles and execution is improving gradually. He highlighted how the side adjusted expectations during their innings against KKR, initially targeting 210–220 but eventually settling for a total of 192/5, which proved competitive on a slowing pitch.
CSK’s bowling performance in that match was led by spinner Noor Ahmad, who produced a match-winning spell of 3 wickets for 21 runs, effectively dismantling KKR’s chase. He credited his success to managing the humid conditions and maintaining grip on the ball.
Despite Khaleel Ahmed’s setback, CSK management will look to maintain their recent momentum as they aim to climb up the points table and strengthen their playoff chances in a tightly contested season.
