Mumbai Indians Reveal Reason Behind Hardik Pandya’s Absence as MI Outclass Lucknow Super Giants
The Mumbai Indians sprang a major surprise ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, as captain Hardik Pandya was notably absent from the playing XI. In his place, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in to lead the side, leaving fans puzzled when he walked out for the toss.
Initially, little was known about Pandya’s absence. Even teammate Ryan Rickelton admitted he was unaware of the situation until shortly before the match. At the toss, stand-in skipper Suryakumar simply stated that Pandya “was not well,” offering no further clarification.
However, after the match, Rickelton revealed that the MI captain had been sidelined due to back spasms. Speaking at the post-match press conference, he said he only learned about the issue on Monday afternoon and remained uncertain about the severity of the injury or the timeline for Pandya’s return. Despite the uncertainty, Rickelton expressed optimism that the all-rounder would rejoin the squad soon as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
Pandya’s absence also paved the way for Rohit Sharma’s return to the XI. The team made another change, bringing in Corbin Bosch in place of Trent Boult, while the rest of the lineup remained unchanged.
On the field, MI delivered a commanding performance. After opting to bowl first, they conceded a massive 228/5, courtesy of explosive innings from Nicholas Pooran (63 off 21), Mitchell Marsh (44 off 25), and Himmat Singh (40* off 31).
In response, MI produced a stunning chase. Rickelton starred with a blistering 83 off just 32 balls, while Rohit Sharma smashed 84 off 44 deliveries. The duo stitched together a remarkable 143-run partnership that dismantled the LSG bowling attack and guided Mumbai to victory in just 18.4 overs.
Despite the emphatic win, MI’s campaign remains challenging. They currently sit ninth on the points table with three wins and seven losses, while LSG continue to struggle at the bottom with just two victories from nine matches.
With questions still lingering over Hardik Pandya’s fitness, Mumbai Indians will be hoping for their captain’s swift recovery as the tournament heads into a crucial phase.
