“I Want to Die Singing”: Asha Bhosle’s Heartfelt Last Wish Was Rooted in Music

Mumbai — Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital, once expressed a deeply emotional final wish that reflected the essence of her life—music.

Appearing on the podcast Couple of Things, hosted by actor Amrita Rao and RJ Anmol, Asha Bhosle spoke candidly about how she hoped her last moments would be spent doing what she loved most—singing.

Meri khud ki iccha aisi hai ki gaate gaate hi main chali jau. Yehi meri iccha hai… Gaana meri life hai…” she said, expressing that she wished to leave the world while singing. She added that she had been connected to music since childhood, learning classical singing from the age of three under her father’s guidance.

Reflecting on her long journey, she said, “Film line mein 82 years ho gaye hain… abhi jaake yeh iccha hai ki gaate gaate mera dum nikle,” emphasizing that she would find the greatest happiness in singing until her very last breath.

Born into a musical family, Asha Bhosle went on to build one of the most remarkable careers in Indian music history, spanning over eight decades and producing thousands of songs across multiple languages and genres. Her voice became a defining feature of Indian cinema, known for its versatility, emotion, and range.

She is survived by her family, including her children—Hemant, Varsha, and Anand—from her first marriage to Ganpatrao Bhosle. Her son Hemant Bhosle also worked in the film industry as a music composer, contributing to films such as Dharam Shatru and Sansani: The Sensation, and being associated with memorable musical collaborations in Bollywood.

As the nation mourns her passing, Asha Bhosle’s words now resonate with even greater poignancy. Her final wish was not just about death, but about life itself—one entirely devoted to music.

Her legacy lives on through her timeless songs, which continue to echo across generations, ensuring that her voice will never truly fade.
