Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files banned in West Bengal during its nationwide September 5, 2025 release will finally premiere in state theaters on May 15, 2026. Rumors of a May 8 launch were debunked by Agnihotri on Instagram Stories amid BJP’s landslide victory over TMC. This political shift unlocks screens previously dominated by local films like Dhumketu and Baaghi 4.

2025 Ban: Theatre Owners’ Excuses Exposed

The Bengal Files faced an unofficial ban in West Bengal during its nationwide theatrical release on September 5, 2025—no formal government order existed, but theater intimidation and political pressure from the TMC regime prevented screenings. Producer Pallavi Joshi alleged TMC workers threatened exhibitors, fearing violence, while director Vivek Agnihotri cited trailer blocks, assaults, and dozens of FIRs.
The film depicts the 1946 Direct Action Day riots in Kolkata and Noakhali genocide, themes accused of “distorting Hindu genocide history” against TMC’s narrative. Mamata Banerjee mocked it pre-release, leading to accusations of suppressing “truth” on partition violence. Joshi wrote to President Droupadi Murmu: “Theatre owners… are refusing to screen it, fearing violence by ruling party workers.”

Kolkata owners like Navina Cinema’s Navin Choukhani blamed slots for Baaghi 4 and Dhumketu: “It’s a single screen… we are not running The Bengal Files.” Priya’s Arijit Dutta pointed to multiplexes. Calcutta HC questioned the state on this “de facto restriction,” violating Articles 14, 19, 21.

Agnihotri’s Claims: Attacks and Censorship

Agnihotri stated: “Baseless FIRs filed against me… I was cancelled in Bengal.” Shooting faced restrictions; he secretly screened during 2026 elections despite assaults.

“There is no official ban, yet an unofficial ban silences the film.” – Pallavi Joshi to President

Agnihotri’s Fight: Attacks, FIRs, Secret Screenings

Agnihotri detailed the saga: “Our trailer launch was blocked. We were attacked and assaulted. Dozens of FIRs were filed against me. I was cancelled in Bengal… During these elections, we ensured the film was somehow shown to as many people as possible across Bengal.”

He screened it underground during the 2026 polls, vowing resilience after being barred from receiving a governor’s award.
