Abhishek Sharma Reprimanded by BCCI Despite Match-Winning Performance as SRH Thrash KKR
Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Abhishek Sharma found himself in the spotlight for mixed reasons following his team’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. While his explosive batting display played a key role in SRH’s emphatic win, his on-field conduct led to disciplinary action from the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council.
Abhishek Sharma was reprimanded and handed a 25 per cent fine on his match fee, along with a demerit point, for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The sanction came after he admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3, which relates to the use of audible obscenities during a match. As per IPL rules, the Match Referee’s decision in Level 1 offences is final and binding.
In its official statement, the IPL confirmed the penalty, stating that the Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder accepted the sanction. While Level 1 breaches are considered minor, repeated violations can result in stricter disciplinary measures, including potential suspensions.
Despite the controversy, Abhishek’s performance with the bat was a major highlight of the match. The left-handed opener smashed 48 runs off just 21 balls, hitting four sixes and four boundaries. He, along with Travis Head, gave SRH a flying start, stitching together an explosive 82-run opening partnership in just 34 balls.
Building on this strong foundation, Heinrich Klaasen anchored the innings with a fluent half-century, scoring 52 runs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed a valuable 39. Their combined efforts powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to a commanding total of 226 for 8.
In response, Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to keep up with the steep target and were bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was the top scorer for KKR with a quick 52 off 29 balls, but lacked support from the rest of the batting lineup.
SRH’s bowling unit delivered a clinical performance, with Jaydev Unadkat leading the attack with figures of 3 for 21. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Eshan Malinga chipped in with two wickets each, sealing a comprehensive 65-run victory for their side.
While Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrated a dominant win, Abhishek Sharma’s reprimand serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline on the field. Balancing performance with professionalism remains crucial, especially in a high-profile tournament like the IPL.
