As educator and activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike enters its 20th day, concern over his health continues to grow across the country. While several public figures have openly expressed support or appealed to him to end his fast, actor Vivek Oberoi chose to remain neutral when asked about the ongoing protest.

During a recent public appearance, Vivek was questioned about Wangchuk’s hunger strike and the movement demanding reforms in India’s examination system. Instead of commenting directly on the issue, the actor made it clear that he prefers to stay away from political matters.

I’m an actor, not a politician. I don’t involve myself in political issues. I observe, I learn, and life keeps teaching us many things,” Vivek said.

Although he avoided taking a stand for or against the protest, Vivek stressed that the freedom to express different opinions is an essential part of a healthy democracy. He said every individual should have the right to raise their voice and share their concerns peacefully.

According to Vivek, the fact that people are able to express their views openly reflects the strength of a democratic society. However, he stopped short of commenting on the protesters’ demands or the government’s response, choosing instead to keep his remarks focused on democratic values.

Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk continues his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. He joined the protest on June 28, supporting a movement led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is demanding accountability over the alleged NEET examination irregularities and broader reforms in India’s competitive examination system.

Doctors monitoring Wangchuk have said that his condition remains fragile. According to the latest medical update, he is under constant supervision, has lost nearly nine kilograms since beginning his fast, and continues to grow weaker with each passing day.

The Delhi High Court is also set to hear a public interest litigation seeking urgent medical intervention, including hospitalisation and necessary treatment for Wangchuk due to concerns over his health.

Despite appeals from several political leaders, actors and supporters asking him to end his hunger strike, Wangchuk has remained firm. He has urged people not to persuade him to eat but instead to ask the government to engage in dialogue over the issues being raised.

While Vivek Oberoi chose not to take a political position on the matter, his comments highlighted the importance of protecting the democratic right to peaceful expression, even as the debate surrounding Sonam Wangchuk’s protest continues to intensify.
