As anticipation builds around Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious film Ramayana, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has shared why he believes the project could become one of the most significant milestones in Ranbir Kapoor’s career.
Imtiaz, who has directed Ranbir in acclaimed films like Rockstar and Tamasha, recently spoke about the actor’s versatility and his ability to completely immerse himself in every role he takes on. According to the filmmaker, portraying Lord Rama is not just another character for Ranbir—it is an experience that could leave a lasting impact on him both as an actor and as a person.
Speaking about Ranbir’s talent, Imtiaz said that he is capable of taking on any role and transforming himself into the character. He expressed happiness over Ranbir being cast as Lord Rama, adding that the actor has the ability to bring authenticity and emotional depth to the revered figure.
Imtiaz believes one of Ranbir’s greatest strengths is his tendency to absorb qualities from the characters he portrays. That is why he feels playing Lord Rama will be “hugely beneficial” for the actor. He explained that Ranbir is the kind of performer who learns from the personalities he embodies, and taking inspiration from Lord Rama’s virtues could be an enriching experience.
The comments come at a time when Ramayana remains one of the most talked-about films in Indian cinema. While the teaser generated excitement among fans, reactions to Ranbir’s look as Lord Rama were mixed. Some viewers praised the actor’s appearance and screen presence, while others questioned whether he was the ideal choice for the iconic role.
Interestingly, Ranbir will not only portray Lord Rama in the film but will also appear as Lord Parshurama. Speaking about the opportunity earlier, the actor shared his excitement about playing two avatars connected to Lord Vishnu. He described the chance to portray both characters as a unique and rewarding experience.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and backed by Yash and Namit Malhotra, Ramayana boasts a star-studded cast. Sai Pallavi will play Sita, Yash will portray Ravana, Sunny Deol takes on the role of Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey will be seen as Lakshman.
The epic saga is planned as a two-part cinematic event, with the first installment set to release during Diwali 2026 and the second arriving in theatres on Diwali 2027.
Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali is preparing for the release of his upcoming romantic drama Main Vaapas Aaunga, featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Naseeruddin Shah. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on June 12 and is expected to face competition from Bharat Bhagya Vidhata starring Kangana Ranaut and Governor: The Silent Saviour featuring Manoj Bajpayee.
With Ramayana shaping up to be one of the biggest films ever made in India, all eyes are now on Ranbir Kapoor as he prepares to step into the shoes of one of mythology’s most revered heroes.
