South Asian Elegance Redefines Met Gala 2026: From Isha Ambani to Karan Johar, Craft, Heritage and Couture Take Center Stage

South Asian fashion had one of its most dominant global moments yet at the Met Gala 2026, where Indian and diaspora personalities transformed the red carpet into a living exhibition of heritage, craft, and contemporary couture. This year’s theme, celebrating fashion as art, found its most powerful expression in looks that drew directly from memory, regional craft traditions, and generational artistry.

Across silhouettes made from ancestral textiles, sculptural jewellery, and hand-embellished narratives, the South Asian presence wasn’t just visible—it was foundational to the aesthetic language of the night.

Isha Ambani: A living archive of jewellery and textile craft

Isha Ambani arrived in one of the most talked-about looks of the evening, wearing a custom creation by Gaurav Gupta that reimagined the sari as sculptural couture.

The gold-toned ensemble was woven with pure gold threads by artisans working with Swadesh, blending traditional Indian textile practices with futuristic construction. The blouse became the centrepiece—embedded with over 1,800 carats of diamonds along with emeralds, polki, and kundan.

What elevated the look further was its emotional layer: heirloom jewels from Nita Ambani’s personal collection were incorporated into the garment. This transformed the blouse into a wearable archive of family legacy, turning jewellery into structure rather than accessory.

The sari itself was engineered to behave like draped memory—fluid yet controlled, echoing temple jewellery aesthetics while maintaining a modern architectural silhouette.

Simone Ashley: Chainmail couture with modern restraint

Simone Ashley brought a radically different energy to the carpet in a Stella McCartney creation made entirely of silver chain draping.

The look was stripped of excess fabric, relying instead on metallic movement and body contouring. The chains were arranged to create a fluid silhouette that shifted under light, giving the impression of liquid armour.

It was a minimal yet powerful interpretation of the “Fashion is Art” dress code—where material itself became sculpture.

Karan Johar: Ravi Varma reimagined in couture storytelling

Karan Johar turned his appearance into a visual homage to Indian art history. His ensemble, designed by Manish Malhotra and styled by Eka Lakhani, was directly inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings.

The outfit featured hand-painted imagery drawn from classical Indian iconography, including lotus motifs, swans, and architectural pillars reminiscent of temple and palace aesthetics. Zardozi embroidery added dimensional richness, while even the jacket lining carried painted narratives.

The result was a garment that functioned as a moving canvas, merging cinema, mythology, and couture craftsmanship.

Pacho and Princess Gauravi Kumari: Royal heritage in modern tailoring

Pacho’s ensemble, developed in collaboration with Prabal Gurung, was constructed in deep velvet and took over 600 hours to complete in Jaipur. It incorporated traditional techniques like aari embroidery, zardozi, dabka, and resham, reflecting royal craftsmanship with contemporary tailoring precision.

Gauravi Kumari, meanwhile, delivered one of the most emotionally grounded looks of the night. Her gown incorporated an original chiffon sari belonging to Maharani Gayatri Devi.

Rather than reinterpretation, the garment preserved the fabric’s authenticity. The sari was structurally integrated into a couture silhouette, allowing it to retain its natural drape while being shaped into a modern red-carpet form.

The result was a rare moment where heritage was not referenced—it was physically present.

Natasha Poonawalla: Art object meets couture architecture

Natasha Poonawalla wore a sculptural creation by British artist Marc Quinn titled Orchid Pectoral, paired with a couture gown by Dolce & Gabbana.

The piece functioned as wearable sculpture, sitting between jewellery and installation art. It reframed the body as a gallery space, aligning directly with the Met Gala’s conceptual focus this year.

Sudha Reddy: The Tree of Life as cultural architecture

Sudha Reddy collaborated with Manish Malhotra and stylist Mariel Haenn on a deeply symbolic ensemble inspired by the Kalamkari tradition.

The “Tree of Life” motif—central to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana’s textile heritage—was translated into layered embroidery, metallic detailing, and narrative textile construction. The look required thousands of hours of artisan work, blending zardozi, marodi, resham, and metal embroidery into a cohesive visual language.

It was designed not just as fashion, but as a cultural ecosystem rendered in fabric.

Manish Malhotra: Turning artisans into the story

Manish Malhotra made a meta-fashion statement by wearing a look that highlighted the very people behind couture production.

His bandhgala and cape featured embroidered signatures and names of artisans who have worked in his atelier for decades. This transformed the garment into a living tribute to craftsmanship itself, shifting focus from designer to collective creation.

Ananya Birla: Identity, sculpture and futuristic couture

Ananya Birla arrived in a structured Robert Wun ensemble styled by Rhea Kapoor, anchored by a metallic sculptural mask created by artist Subodh Gupta.

The look combined tailored structure with performative anonymity, where the mask became both shield and statement. It blurred identity, turning the body into conceptual space rather than just silhouette.

Diya Mehta Jatia: Shola craft reimagined

Diya Mehta Jatia showcased West Bengal’s Shola craft through a modern sculptural bodice layered over rich Kanjivaram silk.

The ivory, baroque-inspired detailing mimicked architectural carving while remaining rooted in organic craft material. This juxtaposition of softness and structure created one of the most technically interesting ensembles of the night.

A defining global shift

What emerged at the Met Gala 2026 was not a collection of isolated fashion moments, but a collective narrative shift.

South Asian representation moved beyond visibility into authorship. These looks were not simply inspired by Indian culture—they were built from it, often using heirloom textiles, traditional crafts, and living artisanship as structural foundations.

From diamond-embedded heritage to sculptural masks and hand-painted couture, the red carpet became a global stage for a simple but powerful idea: South Asian craft is no longer influencing fashion—it is shaping its future.
