CSK CEO Confirms Sanju Samson to Keep Wickets in MS Dhoni’s Absence Ahead of IPL 2026 Opener

Chennai, March 30, 2026 – With MS Dhoni unavailable for Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) season opener, the franchise has entrusted Sanju Samson with the wicket-keeping responsibilities at the start of IPL 2026. The decision was confirmed by CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan ahead of the team’s clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Samson, who joined CSK in a trade deal with RR before the IPL auction, is not only seen as a solution for the short term but also as a potential long-term successor to the legendary Dhoni. Since his signing, speculation has been rife over his role behind the stumps, and Vishwanathan’s comments have now clarified the plan for the opening match.

Vishwanathan Backs Samson’s Form and Potential

Speaking to the media, Vishwanathan said:

“See, obviously, Sanju will be keeping because MS Dhoni is not going to play. Sanju’s form is great and he’s been knocking well in the nets. We’re hoping that he’ll give the impact that CSK is looking for this season. Of course, we have Ruturaj [Gaikwad], who is also capable of taking the team to higher levels, and his captaincy is one which will definitely lift the team.”

The CEO emphasized that while Samson will take the gloves for now, Dhoni’s return will be assessed without placing unnecessary pressure on the young Kerala cricketer.

“As far as Sanju is concerned, we don’t want to put any pressure on him because we know his capabilities. I have not spent much time talking to Sanju, as I met him only a couple of days back, and during practice, I would never go and disturb him. I’m very confident that Sanju, with his abilities and form, will be a great bet for us,” Vishwanathan added.

A Glimpse Into CSK’s Future

Samson’s role as wicket-keeper at the start of the season provides the franchise and fans a look at CSK’s future plans. While Dhoni’s legendary presence remains irreplaceable, the team appears to be gradually preparing for the transition, with Samson expected to play a key part in the long-term strategy.

The CSK management is confident that the right balance of experience, with Ruturaj’s leadership, and Samson’s dynamic abilities will help the team maintain its competitive edge in IPL 2026.
