IPL 2026: Yash Thakur Banks on Clarity and Death-Overs Expertise to Boost PBKS
New Delhi: As the IPL 2026 approaches, Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Yash Thakur is focused on mastering the death overs, the phase of T20 cricket where matches are often won or lost. Known for his calm approach and methodical execution, Thakur believes clarity of mind and precise planning are the foundations of his success.
Death Overs: Mindset Over Variations
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Thakur explained that his approach to bowling in crunch moments begins with mental clarity rather than variations.
“I feel that death overs are the most challenging. So, I always try to do my best for the team in the most challenging situations. Your mind and plans should be clear. Then your execution comes in the end. These three things, I feel, are the most important,” he said.
Thakur’s reputation as a death-overs specialist is backed by stats: 13 of his 25 IPL wickets have come in the 17-20 overs phase, highlighting his knack for handling pressure in crucial moments.
Form and Preparation
Though he played only two games for PBKS in IPL 2025, Thakur’s domestic performances signal his readiness for a bigger role. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he took 18 wickets in seven matches at an economy of 6.8, ranking third among pacers who bowled at least 25 overs. He followed that with 19 wickets in nine games during Vidarbha’s Vijay Hazare Trophy-winning campaign.
Thakur prepared for IPL 2026 with a focused training stint at NCA Nagpur, working on yorkers, wide yorkers, and slower deliveries, alongside dedicated batting practice to anticipate opposing strategies.
“As per my bowling plan, I work on my thinking, execution, and the specific deliveries I have to work on. It makes me feel prepared for the IPL,” he said.
Learning from India ‘A’ and Adapting Across Formats
Participation in India ‘A’ tours against Australia ‘A’, South Africa ‘A’, and the Rising Stars Asia Cup provided Thakur exposure to near-international conditions, teaching him patience, temperament, and adaptability.
“The format will change as time goes by, but you have to adapt very quickly because the game has become so fast. Every player must be adaptable,” he said, highlighting his professionalism.
PBKS Culture and Team Goals
Thakur credits PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting for fostering a positive, cohesive team environment since 2025.
“Shreyas bhai and Ricky sir changed the environment, making it fun-loving and positive. Everyone cares for each other. Even if a player is not in the XI, they think about how to do their best for the team,” he explained.
With PBKS still chasing their first IPL trophy after narrowly missing out last season, Thakur emphasizes process over results:
“The end goal is to win that trophy. The calmer and more positive you are, the better you execute. I saw this in domestic games and I want to do the same in IPL,” he concluded.
As IPL 2026 kicks off on March 28, Thakur’s death-overs expertise, combined with his mental clarity and disciplined preparation, could prove decisive for PBKS in their title pursuit.
