Rajasthan Royals Sold for Record $1.63 Billion; Dasun Shanaka Replaces Injured Sam Curran for IPL 2026

The ownership saga of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) has finally concluded, with a consortium led by US-based entrepreneur Kal Somani emerging as the new owners. The deal, reportedly valued at $1.63 billion (approximately ₹15,286 crore), makes RR the most expensive franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

New Owners and Their Global Backing

Kal Somani, the founder of IntraEdge, Academian, and Truyo.AI, will lead the consortium. He is joined by American businessman Rob Walton of the Walmart family and the Hamp family, majority owners of NFL side Detroit Lions. Sheila Ford Hamp, part of the ownership group, also has ties to the Ford family, co-owners of Ford Motor Company. The acquisition covers 100% of the franchise, and the change in ownership will officially take effect after IPL 2026.

This historic deal has set a new benchmark in IPL valuations, highlighting the growing global interest in the league.

Dasun Shanaka Steps In for Injured Sam Curran

Ahead of IPL 2026, RR also confirmed a replacement for English all-rounder Sam Curran, who has been ruled out due to injury. Sri Lankan T20I captain Dasun Shanaka will join the Royals, bringing both batting and bowling prowess to the team.

Curran, who was traded to RR from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) along with Ravindra Jadeja, was expected to be a key contributor. RR director of cricket and head coach Kumar Sangakkara expressed both disappointment and optimism:

“We are disappointed to lose a player of Sam’s calibre so close to the start of the season. Sam brings immense value with both bat and ball. However, we are pleased to have found an ideal replacement in Dasun Shanaka, a finisher with the bat and a quality all-rounder who helps maintain the balance of our side.”

Shanaka, who previously played for Gujarat Titans, has a prolific international career with 6 Tests, 71 ODIs, and 131 T20Is, scoring over 3,350 runs and claiming 86 wickets. He has been signed for ₹2 crore for the 2026 season.

IPL 2026 Outlook

With the new ownership and addition of Dasun Shanaka, Rajasthan Royals are preparing for a competitive campaign. The record-breaking sale underlines the increasing commercial potential of IPL franchises and cements the league’s status as a global sporting powerhouse.
