Gun Attempt on Farooq Abdullah Foiled at Jammu Wedding; Attacker Overpowered
A shocking incident unfolded at a wedding in Jammu on Wednesday evening when a gunman aimed a firearm at former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who was attending the event alongside serving Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. The assailant was immediately overpowered by security personnel, preventing any harm, according to police reports.
Incident Details
The incident occurred at Hotel Royal Park in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu. CCTV footage from the venue shows the gun being pointed at Farooq Abdullah at point-blank range from behind. Initially, the veteran politician mistook the gunfire for a firecracker.
Security personnel on-site acted swiftly, subduing the gunman identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal. Police said the suspect appeared inebriated and claimed personal motives dating back 20 years. He was subsequently taken into custody.
Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah’s son, confirmed that his father had a “very close shave” and praised the quick actions of the security team for averting a potential tragedy. Farooq Abdullah himself expressed gratitude for his safety, stating, “God saved me.”
Security Lapse Highlighted
The incident highlighted potential security lapses at high-profile events. While the gunman was quickly overpowered, the fact that he managed to approach the National Conference president with a firearm raised questions about event security protocols and crowd management. Police are investigating how the suspect managed to bring a weapon into the venue and whether there were gaps in screening or coordination.
Motive and Investigation
Although initial reports suggest that the attacker claimed a personal grudge dating back two decades, police are investigating the exact motive behind the attempt. Authorities have also noted the suspect’s state of intoxication at the time of the incident.
The quick response of the security personnel ensured that no guests or dignitaries were harmed during the attack. The Jammu Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that necessary measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by public figures at crowded events and underscores the importance of stringent security arrangements to safeguard attendees.
