After years of speculation and endless fan requests, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has finally shared the update that every Munna Bhai fan has been waiting for. The celebrated director has confirmed that Munna Bhai 3 is officially in development, with multiple scripts currently being worked on.

Speaking to NDTV while promoting his upcoming OTT series Pritam Pedro, Hirani also opened up about one of Bollywood’s biggest mysteries—why the much-talked-about Munna Bhai Chale America was shelved despite an official teaser being released years ago.

‘Munna Bhai 3’ Is Finally Taking Shape

Hirani revealed that he and his team are actively working on scripts for the third installment of the beloved franchise, which will reunite Sanjay Dutt as Munna Bhai and Arshad Warsi as Circuit.

The filmmaker admitted that while fans have waited for nearly two decades, he never wanted to make a sequel just for the sake of it.

According to Hirani, the team has been developing different story ideas, but they are committed to making the film only when they are completely satisfied with the script.

Why ‘Munna Bhai Chale America’ Was Shelved

One of the biggest questions among Bollywood fans has been what happened to Munna Bhai Chale America.

The film was announced years ago with a hilarious teaser that showed Munna and Circuit preparing to travel to the United States by learning English. However, despite the excitement, the project never went on floors.

Explaining the reason, Hirani said the teaser was created long before the screenplay was completed.

“That trailer was made very early. We were still writing. At that time, Vinod wanted to announce the upcoming film, so we made the teaser showing Munna and Circuit going to America. But we could never finish that script,” Hirani revealed.

He added that although the original idea was abandoned, the desire to bring Munna and Circuit back has never faded.

The Magic Of Munna And Circuit Lives On

The conversation also brought back memories of the incredible craze surrounding the franchise.

Arshad Warsi recalled an unforgettable incident from the shooting of Lage Raho Munna Bhai at Mumbai’s Marine Drive.

He remembered seeing thousands of people gathering at the location and initially believed the crowd had come to see Sanjay Dutt.

“I thought everyone had come because Sanju was standing there. Then he told me, ‘I’ve never seen such a huge crowd in my life. They’re here because Munna and Circuit are standing together,'” Warsi recalled.

Rajkumar Hirani added that the crowd had become so massive that the team had no option but to stop shooting.

According to the filmmaker, more than one lakh people had gathered at the location, highlighting the extraordinary popularity of the iconic duo.

A Franchise That Changed Bollywood Comedy

The Munna Bhai series remains one of Bollywood’s most loved film franchises.

Released in 2003, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. introduced audiences to the lovable gangster Munna and his loyal sidekick Circuit. The film became a blockbuster and won hearts with its perfect blend of comedy, emotion and social messaging.

Its sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), became an even bigger success. The film popularised the concept of “Gandhigiri” and was praised for delivering an important social message through humour.

Even after nearly twenty years, the chemistry between Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi continues to enjoy a cult following.

Hirani’s New OTT Venture

Apart from discussing Munna Bhai 3, Hirani also spoke about his upcoming OTT series Pritam Pedro, which marks his debut as a producer in the streaming space.

The coming-of-age dramedy is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Avinash Arun and features Hirani’s son, Vir Hirani, making his acting debut alongside Arshad Warsi.

Hirani revealed that he never intended to launch his son in films. Instead, he wanted Vir to carve his own path.

Initially interested in filmmaking, Vir later decided to pursue acting. He enrolled in drama school, performed in theatre and independently auditioned for Pritam Pedro without informing his father.

Director Avinash Arun confirmed that Vir secured the role purely on merit after impressing him through multiple audition videos.

Fans Have Every Reason To Celebrate

While Pritam Pedro marks a new beginning for Rajkumar Hirani in the OTT space, it is the confirmation of Munna Bhai 3 that has generated the biggest excitement.

Although Hirani has not announced a release date or revealed story details, his confirmation has reignited hopes of seeing Munna and Circuit together on the big screen once again.

For fans who have waited almost two decades, the iconic duo’s return finally feels closer than ever. If everything goes according to plan, Bollywood’s most beloved gangster and his loyal friend could soon be back with another heartwarming, hilarious and socially relevant adventure.
