A West Indies Championship match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was abandoned mid-game after officials declared the pitch unsafe for play, following a serious on-field incident involving a batter being struck on the helmet by a sharply rising delivery.

The match, contested between the Leeward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago, saw West Indies pacer Jayden Seales in devastating form, claiming seven wickets as he consistently exploited the unpredictable bounce on offer. However, the contest took a concerning turn during the Leeward Islands’ innings.

Batting against Seales, Jeremiah Louis was struck on the helmet by a delivery that reared up unexpectedly off the surface. The impact caused the batter to fall to the ground, with his helmet dislodged in the process. In a moment of visible frustration and distress, Louis kicked away his helmet before walking off the field. He was later taken to hospital for a precautionary concussion assessment and was reported to be in stable condition.

At the time of the incident, the Leeward Islands were struggling at 140/7, with all seven wickets having fallen to Seales. The nature of the pitch quickly came under scrutiny as players and officials raised concerns over its inconsistent and dangerous behaviour.

Following an inspection, match officials determined that the surface had developed uneven and unpredictable bounce, making it unsafe to continue. After consultation with the match referee and ground authorities, the decision was taken to abandon the match in accordance with playing conditions.

In its official statement, Cricket West Indies confirmed that the pitch could not be repaired without compromising fairness or safety, leading to the game being declared a draw. Both teams were awarded points as per competition rules.

Cricket West Indies further noted that no additional matches are scheduled at the venue until the Championship Final. The governing body assured that all necessary measures will be taken to prepare a safe and suitable pitch for the upcoming fixture, which is also set to be played at the same ground.

The incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns around pitch safety in domestic cricket, especially in conditions where uneven surfaces can pose serious risks to player welfare.
