Veteran actor and politician Hema Malini has opened up about her successful film career, revealing that despite being one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, she was never the industry’s highest-paid actress.

Speaking in a recent interview, Hema dismissed the long-held belief that she earned the highest fees during the peak of her career in the 1970s and 1980s. According to the legendary actress, the amount actors receive today is far beyond what she ever earned.

Recalling those days, Hema said producers paid actors only modest amounts, even when they were at the top of their careers. She explained that while her popularity led to small increases in her remuneration, she never received the massive pay cheques that today’s stars command.

The actress also revealed that she never chose films based on money. Instead, she focused on the quality of her work and the relationships she shared with filmmakers.

Hema shared that she never made financial demands before signing a film. If a producer said they had a limited budget, she and her family happily accepted it without any arguments. She credited her mother, who managed her career, for always being understanding and supportive of producers.

She even recalled accepting whatever payment was offered, saying they never insisted on a fixed amount and were grateful for whatever they received.

Looking back, Hema said the real reward was not the money but the love, respect and recognition she earned through her films. According to her, the memories and appreciation from audiences have been far more valuable than any paycheck.

Hema Malini began her acting journey with Sapno Ka Saudagar and went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actresses. She delivered several memorable performances in blockbuster films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Dream Girl, Satte Pe Satta and Baghban.

Fondly known as Bollywood’s “Dream Girl,” Hema has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over five decades. Besides acting, she is also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, filmmaker and politician, currently serving as a Member of Parliament.

Her latest comments have given fans a glimpse into an era when passion for cinema often came before financial rewards, highlighting how the industry has changed over the years.
