Swara Bhasker has recalled her reaction to the Supreme Court’s 2019 Ayodhya verdict, saying that she was deeply upset by the decision and felt it was “very unfair.” The actor also revealed that she reached out to several Muslim friends after the verdict, including Bollywood stars Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Speaking on The Midnight Hour podcast, Swara recalled how strongly she reacted when the judgment was announced. She said she messaged Muslim people in her phonebook because she wanted them to know that, as a Hindu, she was sorry and did not agree with the decision.

“I was so upset when that verdict came out. It felt it was very unfair. I messaged all the Muslims in my phonebook—from Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman sir—to Fahadh Ahmed,” Swara said. She added that she wanted to tell them, “As a Hindu, I just want you to know that I’m really sorry, I am really ashamed, and I don’t agree with this.”

Her remarks have now sparked fresh reactions on social media, with several users criticising her views and discussing her comments about the 2019 judgment.

What was the 2019 Ayodhya verdict?

The Supreme Court delivered its judgment on November 9, 2019, in the long-running Ayodhya land dispute. The Constitution Bench unanimously directed that the disputed site be handed over for the construction of a Ram temple. The court also directed the government to allot five acres of suitable alternative land to the Sunni Central Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque.

The dispute concerned the site in Ayodhya where the Babri Masjid stood before its demolition in December 1992. The judgment brought the decades-long title dispute before the Supreme Court to a conclusion.

Swara’s comments bring the debate back

Swara’s latest comments have brought renewed attention to how celebrities responded to the Ayodhya verdict at the time. Her account is specifically about her personal reaction to the judgment and her decision to contact Muslim friends.

The actor has often spoken publicly on social and political issues, and her comments have previously generated strong reactions online. This latest revelation has similarly led to a debate on social media, with people expressing differing views about her position.

Whatever one’s view of the judgment or Swara’s comments, her remarks reflect how emotionally significant the Ayodhya dispute and the 2019 verdict were for many people across India.
