Fans of the Stree franchise may have to wait a little longer to see Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor return to the horror-comedy universe. While Stree 3 was earlier announced for an August 13, 2027 release, producer Dinesh Vijan has now hinted that the film could arrive in 2028 instead.

Speaking at a panel with Rajkummar Rao, Vijan opened up about the film’s timeline and explained that director Amar Kaushik first needs to complete his ambitious project Mahavatar. According to Vijan, Kaushik is expected to finish Mahavatar in June next year, after which work on Stree 3 will begin towards the end of 2027.

“Amar Kaushik is the most integral part of Stree, and the entire universe,” Vijan said while discussing the director’s role in the franchise. He added that once Kaushik finishes Mahavatar, they plan to go on the floors with Stree 3 towards the end of next year.

This means the earlier August 13, 2027 release plan may no longer happen, with Vijan suggesting that the third instalment could instead reach theatres in 2028. However, no final release date has been officially confirmed yet.

Dinesh Vijan teases a big surprise in Stree 3

While Vijan did not reveal much about the story, he made it clear that the third film will have everything audiences have loved about the franchise, but it will also take the story in an unexpected direction.

The producer joked that he could get into trouble with Amar Kaushik if he revealed too many details because the director has already finished writing the story and does not want spoilers to get out.

Vijan teased that viewers should forget whatever they think they know about the upcoming film. He promised that while the familiar elements of the franchise will return, the beginning and ending of Stree 3 will be a “complete revelation.”

That statement has already made the wait even more exciting for fans, especially after the success and popularity of the first two films.

Stree 3 script is already ready

The good news for fans is that the script for Stree 3 has already been written. The delay is mainly linked to the production schedule, with Amar Kaushik currently busy with Mahavatar.

Vijan also hinted that the makers are looking at two major release windows in 2028 — Independence Day or Christmas. While he mentioned these periods as possibilities, the makers are yet to lock an exact date.

The Stree franchise began with Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree in 2018 and returned with Stree 2 in 2024. Over the years, the franchise has become an important part of Maddock Films’ horror-comedy universe, which also includes films such as Bhediya and Munjya.

For now, fans will have to wait a little longer for the next chapter. If Dinesh Vijan’s hints are anything to go by, Stree 3 may not just continue the story — it could take the entire horror-comedy universe in a completely unexpected direction when it finally arrives in 2028.
