Deepika Padukone Praised for Professionalism on Housefull Set Despite Battling Malaria
Amid ongoing discussions around her professional commitments and recent reported exits from projects such as Kalki 2 and Spirit, actor Deepika Padukone has received praise from co-star Lara Dutta for her dedication during the shoot of the 2009 film Housefull.
In a recent interview with NDTV, Lara Dutta recalled an incident from the film’s Italy schedule, highlighting how Deepika continued shooting even while suffering from malaria.
A Close-Knit Shoot in Italy
Lara shared that the team, led by producer Sajid Nadiadwala, was stationed together in Italy during the shoot, creating a collaborative working environment.
“We went to Italy… Sajid Nadiadwala created this environment for us where we were all staying together… it becomes conducive to working,” she said.
Deepika’s Illness During Filming
Lara revealed that Deepika fell seriously ill after contracting malaria during the shoot. Despite experiencing high fever and extreme weakness, she continued to remain committed to her work.
“During the filming of Housefull, Deepika actually felt really sick. She had malaria… she was running a high fever all night, shivering and on medication. But she was a thorough professional,” Lara said.
She added that malaria is a condition that can leave a person completely exhausted, making Deepika’s dedication even more notable.
Returning to Set Despite Weakness
According to Lara, Deepika Padukone still showed up for shoots the next day, despite being visibly unwell.
“The next morning… she would show up on set, totally drained and wiped out. But she got her work done. There was absolutely no drop in her performance,” she said.
Lara emphasized that Deepika ensured her health struggles did not impact the production schedule or her performance quality.
“That’s When the Magic Happens”
Praising her commitment, Lara highlighted Deepika’s clarity and focus as an actor.
“You have to give another actor credit for that… malaria absolutely wipes you out… And she was an absolute professional… She’s also very clear and focused on what she needs to do… that’s when the magic happens,” she added.
A Testament to Professionalism
The anecdote has resurfaced amid ongoing industry conversations about work ethics, but Lara Dutta’s remarks highlight a different perspective—one of resilience and dedication under difficult circumstances.
From working through illness on set to becoming one of India’s most successful global stars, Deepika Padukone’s journey continues to be marked by both critical acclaim and strong professional discipline.
