An old video of Shah Rukh Khan recalling how veteran actor Nana Patekar helped him get out of jail has resurfaced on social media following reports of Nana’s death. The emotional anecdote has brought attention to a lesser-known chapter of Shah Rukh’s early years in the film industry and the bond he shared with his former co-star.

Shah Rukh and Nana worked together in the 1992 film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. At the time, Shah Rukh was still finding his feet in Bollywood, long before he became one of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars. His recollection of Nana’s help offers a glimpse into a difficult period of his life and the kindness he remembered from the senior actor.

Shah Rukh Khan Recalls His Difficult Days in Mumbai

The video comes from Tehelka’s Think 2012 event, where Shah Rukh spoke candidly about an incident from the early 1990s. He was new to Mumbai, had recently married Gauri Khan and was trying to establish himself in the film industry.

According to Shah Rukh’s account, a magazine had published an article hinting at an affair between him and a co-star. The report upset Gauri, while Shah Rukh became furious and decided to confront the journalist responsible.

He went to the journalist’s house carrying a ceremonial sword that his father-in-law, an Army officer, had gifted him during the wedding. Looking back at the incident, Shah Rukh acknowledged that his reaction was wrong.

“I behaved very badly. I was jailed. My father-in-law had given me a sword, as they do in Punjabi weddings. I carried that sword to that journalist’s house,” he recalled.

He explained that he had misunderstood his father-in-law’s advice about protecting his daughter and believed the sword would be a suitable weapon to take with him.

‘Nana Patekar Got Me Out of Jail’

Shah Rukh revealed that his confrontation escalated, with threats and an incident in which a young man was injured. Later, while he was shooting for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, the police arrived on the set and took him into custody.

Because it was already past 6 pm, he could not secure bail immediately. It was during this difficult moment that Nana Patekar stepped in to help him.

Remembering the incident, Shah Rukh said, “Nana Patekar got me out of jail, finally, and he was very sweet.”

The actor also reflected on how much he had changed since those early days, admitting that his behaviour at the time had been misguided.

The story highlights a side of Nana that audiences may not always have seen on screen. Known for his intense performances and straightforward personality, he also appears in Shah Rukh’s memory as someone who offered help when a younger colleague found himself in trouble.

Nana Patekar Once Spoke Fondly of Shah Rukh Khan

The respect between the two actors was not one-sided. In a 2024 interview with The Lallantop, Nana spoke warmly about Shah Rukh and praised him for maintaining his affection and respect despite achieving enormous success.

“Aaj bhi bohot pyaar se milta hai. Log bhul jaate hai, woh bhula nahi. Mujhe woh baccha accha lagta hai,” Nana had said.

His words conveyed that Shah Rukh continued to meet him with warmth and had not forgotten their earlier connection. Nana’s affectionate description of the superstar also reflected the fondness he felt for him.

Shah Rukh Khan Remembers His Former Co-Star

Following the news of Nana Patekar’s death, Shah Rukh shared a personal note remembering the veteran actor. Their professional association began early in Shah Rukh’s career, but the resurfaced video has reminded fans that their connection also included a deeply personal act of kindness.

For Shah Rukh, who went on to achieve extraordinary success in Bollywood, the incident remains a memory of a time when he was still learning to navigate fame, anger and responsibility.

As the old video circulates again, fans are remembering Nana not only for his powerful performances but also for the help he reportedly offered a young Shah Rukh Khan during a difficult moment. Sometimes, it is these stories from behind the scenes that reveal why a person leaves such a lasting impression on the people who knew them.
