Rishabh Pant Sends Strong Message After LSG’s Opening Defeat as Sanjiv Goenka Shows Full Support

Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) season got off to a rocky start in IPL 2026, as they suffered a six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their opening match. Batting first at the Ekana Stadium, LSG were bundled out for a modest 141, with key players failing to fire. In reply, DC’s Tristan Stubbs (39*) and Sameer Rizvi (70*) guided their team to a comfortable win with more than two overs to spare.

Following the loss, visuals of LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka engaged in a discussion with captain Rishabh Pant and head coach Justin Langer on the field went viral. Despite the tense-looking exchange, Goenka expressed unwavering confidence in Pant and the squad, taking to X to reassure fans:

“This is a long season, and moments like these are part of building something meaningful. I have full confidence in our captain and the team to respond with strength. To our fans, thank you for your support at Ekana today; we will come back stronger. The story of @LucknowIPL this season is far from written.”

Pant Reflects on Batting Strategy and Leadership

Rishabh Pant, who promoted himself up the order for the match, remains uncertain about whether he will continue opening throughout the season. Pant managed just 7 runs before being run out at the non-striker’s end after Mukesh Kumar deflected a direct hit from Mitchell Marsh. However, his T20 statistics indicate that he thrives in the opener’s role — in 23 games at the top of the order across all T20s, Pant has a strike rate of 159, including one century and five fifties.

“It’s a 50-50 call,” Pant said when asked if he would consistently open instead of the established combination of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh.

On his run-out, Pant emphasized resilience:

“The best way to recover is to ignore the run-out. You can’t control something like that, but thinking about it puts you under pressure.”

Tactical Decisions Amid Batting Collapse

Pant also explained the reasoning behind deploying all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed as an Impact Sub following the early batting collapse, which ruled out the chance to field a specialist spinner like Digvesh Rathi.

“We didn’t secure a partnership, so we had to use the option as an impact sub because we were a few runs short,” Pant said.

He further defended sending Ayush Badoni ahead of Nicholas Pooran in the batting order, stating that Badoni’s role was to stabilize the middle overs in case of early wickets.

“The idea was simple — he would take charge in the middle overs since I opened (on Pooran batting at 5). There was enough with the new ball, but you can’t put the opposition under pressure. But the way the boys bowled, that’s a positive,” Pant added.

Looking Ahead

While the loss was a setback, both Pant and Goenka are signaling a focus on the bigger picture. With key players yet to find form and a long IPL season ahead, LSG will be hoping to bounce back strongly in their next outing. Pant’s willingness to experiment with batting positions and Goenka’s public support send a clear message that the franchise is committed to building a resilient campaign.

The opening defeat may have raised questions, but it also highlighted LSG’s strategy, adaptability, and the leadership of their skipper — signals of a team aiming to grow stronger as the season progresses.
