Afghanistan cricket star Rashid Khan has revealed that he once turned down offers of citizenship from both India and Australia, choosing instead to remain committed to representing his home country on the international stage.
The leg-spinner made the disclosure in his book Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, where he recounted several emotional and defining moments from his cricketing journey, including an incident during the 2023 IPL season that left a strong impression on him.
According to Rashid, a “senior figure” from Indian cricket requested to meet him during the tournament. During their conversation, he was allegedly encouraged to consider settling in India due to the difficult situation in Afghanistan. He was reportedly told that arrangements could be made for him to receive Indian citizenship and continue his cricket career in India.
Rashid recalled being taken aback by the offer but responded respectfully, saying he was proud to represent Afghanistan and intended to continue doing so. He emphasized that his identity and commitment to his national team remained unchanged despite external opportunities.
The cricketer also noted that similar offers came from other countries, including Australia. However, he consistently declined them, stating that if he were ever to stop playing for Afghanistan, he would not play international cricket for any other nation.
Rashid Khan also reflected on earlier moments in his career when his performances in franchise cricket, particularly in the Indian Premier League, led to widespread admiration. After a standout performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018, social media in India was filled with fans expressing a desire for him to be granted citizenship, highlighting his popularity among cricket followers.
