Today, October 2, India remembers two of the country’s most respected leaders — Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, both of whom were born on this historic day.

As the nation observes Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary, people across India remember the leader whose principles of truth, non-violence, peace and courage became closely connected with the freedom movement. Gandhi’s life showed the power of standing firmly for what one believes is right, while bringing people together through unity and determination.

His contribution was not limited to India. His ideas of non-violence and peaceful resistance went on to influence movements for civil rights and social change around the world. Even today, his teachings continue to remind people about the importance of equality, compassion, truth and peaceful action.

October 2 is also the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister. Born on October 2, 1904, Shastri came from a humble background and became deeply involved in India’s freedom struggle. He later served as Prime Minister from 1964 until his death in January 1966.

Shastri was known for his simplicity, humility and commitment to public service. His famous slogan, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” highlighted the importance of both soldiers and farmers and remains closely associated with his legacy.

The fact that Gandhi and Shastri shared the same birth date makes October 2 especially significant for India. Both leaders represented different aspects of public life, but their commitment to the country and its people continues to be remembered.

October 2 is also closely associated with the Swachh Bharat Mission. On October 2, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide cleanliness mission as a mass movement, drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s vision of a clean India. The mission focused on sanitation, eliminating open defecation and improving waste-management and hygiene practices.

The campaign sought to involve citizens across the country in improving cleanliness and sanitation. Its rural sanitation programme focused on household and community toilets, behavioural change and making villages open-defecation free.

But beyond the campaigns, ceremonies and speeches, October 2 is ultimately a day to remember the values these two leaders represented.

Mahatma Gandhi’s message of truth and non-violence continues to inspire generations, while Lal Bahadur Shastri’s simple life and dedication to public service remain an important part of India’s history.

Their lives remind us that leadership is not only about power or position. It is also about sacrifice, responsibility, courage and putting the country and its people before oneself.

Today, we salute Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri for their contributions to India. Their journeys are an important part of the story of the nation, and their legacies continue to live on.

On this Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, let us remember both legends with respect and gratitude. Jai Hind.
