Actor Kangana Ranaut has spoken passionately about the need to change society’s perception of nurses and healthcare support staff ahead of the release of her upcoming film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata. The actress, who plays a nurse in the period crime thriller, said that nurses are often underappreciated despite being among the most important pillars of the healthcare system.
Set against the backdrop of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the film shines a spotlight on the courage and dedication of nurses, ward boys, and hospital workers who continued performing their duties even as chaos unfolded around them. Unlike many films that focus on police officers, soldiers, or political leaders, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata tells the story of ordinary healthcare workers who became silent heroes during a national tragedy.
Speaking about her role and the larger message of the film, Kangana said society needs to rethink how it views the nursing profession.
“We want to change people’s perception. I think nursing is one of the most sexualised professions,” Kangana said during a recent interaction.
The actress explained that nurses are often subjected to stereotypes and disrespectful attitudes, which overshadow the critical work they perform every day. She pointed out that many people fail to recognise the emotional and physical challenges nurses face while caring for patients.
Kangana also referred to a dialogue in the film that reflects the casual and dismissive way some people talk about nurses. According to her, such attitudes are deeply rooted in society and need to be challenged.
“We don’t give them the respect they deserve,” she said. “Nurses do everything from caring for patients and maintaining hygiene to ensuring that hospitals function smoothly. Their contribution goes far beyond what many people realise.”
The actress expressed hope that the film would encourage audiences to appreciate healthcare workers more and acknowledge their role in society.
Beyond nurses, Kangana highlighted the contribution of countless support staff members who keep hospitals running every day. She noted that while doctors rightly receive recognition for their expertise, many others work tirelessly behind the scenes without receiving the same level of appreciation.
“When we think of hospitals, we immediately think of doctors, and their contribution is undoubtedly immense. But there are millions of workers who help the system function every day, and they rarely receive recognition,” she said.
Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata aims to bring those unsung heroes to the forefront. Inspired by true events, the film follows a nurse who balances her personal responsibilities while fulfilling her professional duty during one of the most challenging nights in Mumbai’s history.
The story is centred around the bravery displayed by medical staff at Mumbai’s Cama and Albless Hospital during the 26/11 terror attacks. While much has been written about the security forces and emergency responders who battled the attackers, the film seeks to honour the healthcare workers who continued treating patients despite the danger surrounding them.
Through its narrative, the film attempts to highlight a different kind of heroism—one rooted in compassion, duty, and resilience.
As Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata prepares for its theatrical release on June 12, Kangana hopes the film will not only entertain audiences but also spark conversations about the respect and recognition nurses and healthcare workers deserve.
For the actress, the film is an opportunity to acknowledge the people who often work quietly in the background but play a vital role in saving lives every single day.
