The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration, under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has launched an aggressive inspection drive across Mumbai since May 2026. The focus: unhygienic food, contamination, and violations of food safety norms in hotels, restaurants, and bakeries.
So far, the FDA has inspected 3,137 establishments across the city. During these checks, officials found severe lapses including poor hygiene, pest infestations, improper food storage, and missing safety records. As a result, 165 food business licenses have been suspended to date.
The drive has also uncovered ₹55.72 crore worth of adulterated goods and food items. In such cases, licenses were not just suspended but cancelled after violations were confirmed.
Big Names Hit in the Crackdown
The action started with high-profile places like the Cricket Club of India, Churchgate. A stop-business notice was issued to Goregaon Sports Club for operating without a valid food business license.
Other prominent names whose licenses were suspended include:
Noor Mohammad Hotel, Bhindi Bazaar – Suspended for open windows near food prep areas, risk of pits, and no water quality testing records.
Shalimar Hospitality Pvt Ltd, Bhindi Bazaar – Suspended after 25 previously flagged hygiene and storage issues were not fixed.
Rahmania Restaurant, Umerkhadi – Action taken for improper food storage, rusted kitchen equipment, and poor hygiene documentation.
Flint & Waarsa, Nariman Point – Aditya Birla Group – License suspended for misbranding, wrong location details, and expired food stock.
Madras Dairies, Bandra – Suspended for non-compliance with hygiene standards and missing food safety records.
Hotel Gopal Krishna, Santacruz East – Suspended after rounded inspections and drainage odour were found in kitchen areas.
Hotel Shri Krishna Sujit Bar & Restaurant, Bhandup – Action for poorly maintained refrigerators and unhygienic kitchen conditions.
Karak Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Andheri – Suspended for cockroach infestation and missing employee medical fitness records.
K. Rustom & Co., Brabourne Stadium, Churchgate – The iconic 70-year-old ice cream sandwich brand was hit with an immediate suspension after inspectors found serious hygiene lapses and food safety non-compliance.

The drive has also extended to commercial and legacy bakeries:

Latest: Domino’s Outlets Suspended
Today, the FDA suspended food licenses of 4 Domino’s outlets – 3 in Mumbai and 1 in Satara.
Mumbai outlets affected: Vile Parle West, Borivali West, and R City Mall, Ghatkopar West. The fourth is in Malikapur, Kharad.
Deficiencies found: poor pest control, improper food storage, lack of portable water testing, temperature monitoring issues, and frozen food violations.
In this special drive, 104 establishments were inspected. 95 improvement notices were issued, and 5 licenses were suspended immediately. The remaining will only be cleared after they complete required compliance measures and pass FDA re-inspection.
What It Means for Mumbaikars
Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s strict action raises a big question: Is eating out in Mumbai becoming risky?
The FDA is clearly sending a message hygiene is non-negotiable. While many popular and iconic eateries have been impacted, the government’s move is being welcomed by citizens who want safer food.
The FDA is also giving improvement notices before suspension in some cases, showing a balance between enforcement and correction.
As the drive continues, the key question remains: How many more licenses will be suspended? And will Mumbai finally get rid of unhygienic food?
For now, Mumbaikars may have to think twice before ordering outside food and check if their favorite restaurant is following safety norms.
The Maharashtra government’s action appears to be a step in the right direction – prioritizing public health over brand names.
