MS Dhoni may currently be sidelined due to a calf strain in Indian Premier League 2026, but his influence on Chennai Super Kings continues to be strongly felt inside the dressing room, according to teammates and insiders.

The 44-year-old CSK legend has not yet featured in the ongoing season, though he has reportedly started wicketkeeping practice in the nets. However, there is still no confirmed timeline for his return to competitive action. Despite his absence on the field, his presence off it remains a major driving force for the franchise.

CSK opener Sanju Samson recently spoke about his experience of being part of the five-time champions, highlighting how Dhoni’s leadership and culture continue to shape the team’s mindset even when he is not playing.

“A very different feeling for me… a very star-studded kind of franchise I am involved in nowadays. So I feel a bit more responsible. I cannot easily throw away my wicket,” Samson said at an event.

He further explained how the environment at CSK demands greater accountability from players, especially in high-pressure situations where every dismissal is heavily scrutinised by fans.

“Being a championship side isn’t about behaving like a champion or being arrogant. The base values are set by Mahi bhai and you can actually feel him in every player and support staff,” he added.

Samson’s remarks underline Dhoni’s lasting impact on the franchise culture, often credited with instilling calmness, discipline, and clarity in decision-making across all levels of the team.

Meanwhile, CSK also suffered a setback in their squad after young batter Ayush Mhatre was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a left hamstring injury sustained during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The injury is expected to require 6–12 weeks of rehabilitation.

CSK confirmed the development in an official statement, wishing the 18-year-old a speedy recovery. He had shown promising form earlier in the season, including a quick 30 off 12 balls before being forced off due to injury concerns.

Batting coach Michael Hussey also admitted after the match that the injury appeared serious, though the full extent was initially unclear.

Even amid injuries and uncertainty over player availability, Dhoni’s presence—whether on the field or behind the scenes—continues to remain a defining factor in CSK’s identity this season.
