Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after she raised concerns about an incorrect depiction of India at a restaurant in Glasgow during the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The incident took place after the Indian boxing contingent gathered at a Glasgow restaurant for a celebratory dinner following their impressive performance at the Games. India had won 10 medals in boxing, and the athletes were enjoying the occasion when Lovlina noticed something that immediately caught her attention.
While looking at the restaurant’s menu, the boxer noticed that the map of India used by the establishment did not include the Northeast region. Coming from Assam, Lovlina said the depiction was personally hurtful and decided to bring the matter to the restaurant management.
Rather than creating a confrontation, she politely explained her concern and asked the restaurant to be more careful about the representation in the future.
“Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our North East is missing,” she told the restaurant staff, explaining why the issue mattered to her and to people from the region.
PM Modi praises Lovlina’s gesture
During a meeting with the Commonwealth Games champions after their return from Scotland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought up the incident while interacting with Lovlina.
In a light-hearted moment, Modi asked her about the incident at the restaurant and joked about whether she had been arguing with the restaurant staff. Lovlina explained that it was a happy occasion and that she had simply felt uncomfortable seeing the incorrect map.
She also told the Prime Minister that she had politely pointed it out to the restaurant and that the establishment had agreed to make the necessary changes.
Modi appreciated her awareness, particularly because she noticed the issue while celebrating India’s success at the Games. He said the video of her raising the matter was not an ordinary moment and suggested that it would be remembered for a long time.
Restaurant apologises and promises change
The issue gained attention on social media after a video of Lovlina speaking to the restaurant management circulated online.
Mister Singh’s India, the Glasgow restaurant involved in the controversy, later issued an apology and acknowledged the mistake. The establishment said it would change its logo and use a proper map of India.
The Indian embassy in Glasgow also took note of the matter and raised the issue with the restaurant.
Lovlina’s memorable Commonwealth Games campaign
The incident came shortly after Lovlina delivered another strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Assam boxer won a silver medal in the women’s 75kg category, adding another major achievement to her already impressive career.
Lovlina has established herself as one of India’s leading boxers, having previously won an Olympic bronze medal at the Tokyo Games and medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
