Nearly four years after their relationship became one of the most talked-about topics on social media, businessman and former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has spoken candidly about his former partner, actor and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen. In a recent podcast appearance, Modi not only reflected on their relationship but also strongly defended Sen against the “gold digger” accusations that surfaced when they went public in 2022.
Speaking with admiration and warmth, Modi described Sushmita as one of the most special people in his life. He credited her with having a positive influence on him and said their time together remains a cherished chapter of his life.
“Sushmita was very special to me. She helped me grow in many ways, and she was an important part of my life during that period,” he shared.
Modi revealed that the relationship eventually ended because of the practical difficulties of living in different countries. While Sushmita was based in India, Modi was living in London, making it challenging to maintain a long-distance relationship. Despite their breakup, he emphasized that there is no bitterness between them and that they continue to share a warm friendship.
The businessman also praised Sushmita for her accomplishments, describing her as a strong, independent, and self-made woman. He spoke about her successful career, her financial independence, and the admirable way she has raised her daughters as a single mother.
However, it was his response to the criticism Sushmita faced during their relationship that drew the most attention. When the couple’s romance became public in July 2022, many social media users unfairly labeled the actress a “gold digger.” Modi firmly rejected those claims and insisted that the reality was completely different.
According to him, Sushmita never depended on him financially and was already highly successful before they met. He even claimed that during their time together, she often paid for their outings.
“There wasn’t a single time that I went out with Sushmita that I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend,” Modi said.
He went on to describe her as a remarkable woman who earned her success through hard work and determination. Modi stressed that money never played any role in their relationship and that the accusations made against her were both unfair and inaccurate.
In one of the most memorable moments of the conversation, he turned the criticism on its head, saying, “When people call her a gold digger, I would say Lalit was the diamond digger. She was truly a diamond.”
