Actor-director Riteish Deshmukh has responded to the controversy surrounding a viral video from the success celebration of his historical film Raja Shivaji, offering an explanation and expressing regret if his actions hurt public sentiments.
The video, which quickly spread across social media platforms, showed Riteish dancing at a private celebration while wearing a T-shirt featuring the image of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The clip sparked criticism from some users, who questioned whether the attire was appropriate for such an occasion.
Addressing the controversy through a detailed statement shared on Instagram, Riteish clarified that there was never any intention to disrespect the revered Maratha warrior king. The actor said that as a devoted admirer of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he holds immense respect and reverence for the historical icon.

According to Riteish, the celebration was organised to thank the cast and crew of Raja Shivaji for their dedication and hard work over the three-and-a-half-year journey of making the film. He explained that he attended the event immediately after completing promotional activities for the movie and therefore did not get the opportunity to change his clothes.
The actor further stated that the T-shirt was being used as part of the film’s promotional campaign and was not intended to cause offence in any way.
Apart from addressing concerns regarding the viral clip, Riteish also responded to rumours claiming that he was intoxicated during the event. Strongly rejecting the allegations, he said he has never consumed alcohol in his life and has no intention of doing so in the future.
Calling the rumours completely false, Riteish maintained that several assumptions were being made without any factual basis. He also pointed out that the individual who recorded the video was reportedly not invited to the private gathering.
While defending his intentions, Riteish acknowledged that some people may have felt hurt by the video. He expressed sincere regret to anyone whose sentiments were affected and reiterated his unwavering admiration for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Describing the Maratha ruler as a symbol of faith, inspiration and pride, Riteish said his respect and loyalty towards Shivaji Maharaj remain as strong as ever.
The controversy comes amid the success of Raja Shivaji, which released on Maharashtra Day and has received significant attention from audiences. The historical drama marks one of Riteish’s most ambitious projects to date, with the actor not only directing the film but also portraying the titular role.
Produced by Riteish and his wife Genelia Deshmukh under their banner Mumbai Film Company, the film features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Fardeen Khan, Sachin Khedekar, Jitendra Joshi and Amol Gupte.
As discussions around the viral video continue online, Riteish’s statement appears to be an effort to clear misunderstandings while reaffirming his deep respect for one of Maharashtra’s most revered historical figures.
