Remo D’Souza Opens Up on His Conversion, Name Change and Early Life Journey
Celebrated choreographer and filmmaker Remo D’Souza has shared detailed insights into his personal journey, clarifying the long-standing misconception around his conversion to Christianity and his name change from Ramesh Gopi Nair.
Remo rose to national fame as a judge on the dance reality show Dance India Dance, later becoming one of India’s most popular choreographers and filmmakers. However, long before his television success, his personal identity had already gone through a major transformation.
Conversion at 15, Not Linked to Marriage
Addressing public speculation, Remo clarified that his conversion to Christianity happened when he was just 15 years old and had no connection to his wife, Lizelle D’Souza.
He explained that the assumption that he converted for marriage is incorrect and has followed him for years despite being untrue. His wife Lizelle also supported his clarification, stating that she had no role in his religious decision.

Early Life in Jamnagar and Church Involvement
Born in Bengaluru to Gopi Nair and Madhaviyamma Nair, Remo spent part of his childhood in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where his exposure to church activities played a key role in shaping his early beliefs.
He recalled being actively involved with the church community—participating in stage performances, charity drives, and social work.
“I used to do shows for them, collect clothes, and contribute to charity,” he said, explaining that his involvement grew over time.

The Conversation That Changed Everything
Remo shared that a church priest, Father Davis, once suggested he consider conversion after seeing his involvement in church activities.
According to him, the suggestion came naturally through his work and dedication rather than external pressure.
Following this, he discussed the idea with his father. His father’s response, as Remo recalled, was supportive but grounded:
“Don’t change my name, but do what you want to.”
This response, he said, gave him the freedom to make a personal decision while still respecting his family identity.

Retaining His Roots
Even after converting, Remo maintained a strong connection to his family heritage. He continues to use the name Remo Gopi D’Souza, keeping his father’s name as his middle name as a mark of respect.
Life With Lizelle D’Souza
Remo married Lizelle D’Souza in 1999, and the couple has been together for over two decades. They have two sons, Adonis and Gabriel, and are often seen as one of the most stable families in the entertainment industry.
The choreographer has often credited his family for supporting him through his journey from struggling dancer to one of India’s most successful creative talents.
From Ramesh Gopi Nair to Remo D’Souza
Remo’s journey from Ramesh Gopi Nair to a nationally recognised name reflects both personal and professional evolution. While his career in choreography and filmmaking brought him fame, his recent clarification highlights that his religious conversion was rooted in early spiritual involvement and personal choice—not marriage or external influence.
