Ravichandran Ashwin Urges Patience for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India Debut Despite IPL Heroics
Cricket fans have been abuzz following the sensational performances of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. In a thrilling encounter against Chennai Super Kings at Guwahati, the young sensation smashed a 15-ball half-century on a tricky pitch, leaving opposition bowlers stunned and reigniting debates about his potential senior India debut.
Cricket experts such as Mohammad Kaif and Michael Vaughan have publicly voiced their belief that Sooryavanshi is ready for a call-up to the Indian national team once the IPL season concludes. His extraordinary form, including becoming the youngest centurion in IPL history last year at just 14 and breaking multiple records for India’s Under-19 and A sides, has only intensified the hype.
However, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a more measured perspective, urging patience and caution when considering Sooryavanshi’s senior debut. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin emphasized that the teenager’s cricketing journey is just beginning and that there is no need to rush him into the national setup.
“Don’t give him such a target. He is not even a man, he is a kid. If MS Dhoni is playing until 45 [44], and if Sooryavanshi plays until 40, he has two and a half decades left in cricket. Leave him alone, he will come on his own when the time is right. He is too good not to play for India. He will play anyway eventually. When will he play? For that, we might have to wait a bit. Why are we always in a hurry?” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also praised the teenager’s extraordinary abilities, particularly his strokeplay on challenging pitches. Despite batting on a sticky wicket against CSK, Sooryavanshi produced shots that left seasoned players and spectators in awe. Ashwin noted the youngster’s remarkable bat speed and composure, highlighting the transformative impact he has had on Rajasthan Royals’ performance.
“He turned 15 years old, so he scored a 15-ball 50 – he is showing his age. I mean, what a player he is! How fast is his bat speed? CSK had no answers against him; they looked a flat, deflated unit on the field. RR have put on such a dominating performance that they have said, ‘Look at us, we are also a powerful team in this competition,’” Ashwin remarked.
While Sooryavanshi continues to break records and dazzle fans, Ashwin’s advice underscores the importance of pacing a young player’s career carefully, ensuring that long-term potential is nurtured without undue pressure. For the cricketing world, the message is clear: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is destined for greatness, but his journey to the Indian national team will be a marathon, not a sprint.
With his extraordinary talent and Ashwin’s mentorship through measured guidance, fans can look forward to witnessing the rise of one of cricket’s brightest young stars over the next two decades.
