A tragic incident from Karnataka’s Ballari district has once again raised serious questions about dowry harassment and mental abuse faced by married women. Just days after the shocking Twisha Sharma case, another young woman, 24-year-old Aishwarya, allegedly died by suicide after reportedly enduring continuous mental torture from her husband and mother-in-law.
The incident took place in Kampli town, where Aishwarya had been living after marrying Pradeep Kumar, a veterinarian working in the Animal Husbandry Department. According to police and family members, the marriage was a love marriage, but things allegedly turned painful soon after the wedding.
Aishwarya’s family has accused her husband and mother-in-law of mentally harassing her regularly. They also alleged that she was pressured over dowry-related demands. Family members claimed that despite knowing about the harassment, Pradeep Kumar failed to support his wife or protect her from the alleged abuse at home.
Unable to cope with the emotional distress, Aishwarya reportedly returned to her parental home. Police said she later died by suicide by hanging herself. Investigators also confirmed that she left behind a suicide note in which she reportedly mentioned the reasons behind her extreme step.
Following the complaint filed by her family, Kampli Police registered a case and arrested Pradeep Kumar along with his mother. Further investigation is currently underway.
The heartbreaking case comes at a time when the country is still discussing the death of Twisha Sharma, a newly married woman from Noida whose death at her in-laws’ home in Bhopal triggered nationwide outrage. Her family had also alleged mental harassment and domestic violence after marriage.
These repeated incidents have once again highlighted the emotional pressure and abuse many women silently face within their marital homes. Social activists and women’s rights groups continue to demand stricter action against dowry harassment and stronger emotional support systems for victims facing domestic abuse.
