Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, best remembered for his powerful performances in Ghajini, Lagaan, Sarfarosh, Rowdy Rathore, and the television epic Mahabharat, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over four decades across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Nepali and several other film industries.
The actor breathed his last at a hospital in Mumbai after battling blood cancer. According to his manager, Siddharth Tiwari, Rawat had successfully fought the disease once before, but the cancer returned a few weeks ago. He had been hospitalised for more than a month, and despite medical treatment, his condition continued to deteriorate following the relapse.
Confirming the heartbreaking news, Siddharth said that Pradeep Rawat had been suffering from cancer, which had recently returned, and passed away a few hours later. He is survived by his wife and son, Vikramaditya.

Born on January 21, 1952, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Pradeep Rawat initially became a household name through television. His portrayal of Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat remains one of the most memorable performances from the iconic mythological series. His commanding screen presence and expressive acting made him an audience favourite long before he entered films.
Rawat later carved a unique identity in Indian cinema by portraying strong, intense and often ruthless characters. One of his earliest memorable film roles came in Sarfarosh (1999), where he played Sultan, earning appreciation for his impactful performance.
He achieved nationwide recognition in Lagaan (2001) as the fiery fast bowler Deva Singh Sodhi, whose fierce rivalry with Aamir Khan’s Bhuvan became one of the highlights of the Oscar-nominated sports drama.
His most iconic role, however, came with Ghajini. Rawat portrayed the terrifying crime lord in the 2005 Tamil original before reprising the same character in the 2008 Hindi remake starring Aamir Khan. His intimidating performance made Ghajini one of Indian cinema’s most memorable villains and cemented his reputation as one of the finest negative-role actors in the industry.
Apart from Hindi cinema, Pradeep Rawat enjoyed tremendous popularity in Telugu films, where he appeared in several blockbuster projects including Sye, Chatrapathi, and numerous action entertainers. His ability to effortlessly switch between languages and industries made him one of the most sought-after character actors in Indian cinema.
Throughout his career, Rawat was admired for bringing authenticity, intensity and conviction to every role. Whether portraying a feared antagonist, a strict authority figure or a supporting character, he always left a lasting impression on audiences.
