Superstar Rajinikanth has broken his silence on the criticism he has been facing in recent months, saying that every statement he makes is blown out of proportion. The veteran actor made the remarks during the title launch event of his upcoming film Dharman, where he shared the stage with longtime friend Kamal Haasan and director Ashwath Marimuthu.
Beginning his speech on a candid note, Rajinikanth admitted that he has become hesitant about speaking publicly because his words often become the subject of controversy. The actor said that whether he speaks or remains silent, people find a reason to criticise him.
“The moment someone asks me to speak, I hesitate. Because whenever I speak, it becomes a problem—either for you or for me,” he said in Tamil. He added that even keeping quiet does not spare him from criticism. “If I don’t speak, people ask why I’m silent and joke that I have a kozhukattai in my mouth,” he said with a smile.

Reflecting on his decades-long journey in the spotlight, Rajinikanth said he has learnt an important lesson. According to him, people who dislike someone will continue to do so regardless of what they say or do, while expecting unconditional support from admirers is unrealistic.
“Those who don’t like us will never like us, no matter what we do. At the same time, believing that those who like us will accept everything we do is foolish. One has to be careful,” the actor said.
Controversy Over Vijay Comments
Rajinikanth’s latest remarks come weeks after his comments about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay sparked heated debates online. Following Vijay’s victory in the state elections, rumours surfaced claiming that Rajinikanth was unhappy with the actor’s rise in politics.
To put an end to the speculation, Rajinikanth held a press conference at his Chennai residence and clarified that he had congratulated Vijay immediately after his victory. However, some parts of his statement ended up triggering fresh controversy.
“Rajini is not a cheap or low-standard person to speak unnecessarily about others. I was shocked when I heard such rumours. I congratulated Vijay as soon as he became Chief Minister. I’m not even in politics, so why would I be jealous of Vijay?” Rajinikanth had said.
He also joked, “Maybe if Kamal Haasan becomes Chief Minister, I might feel jealous,” drawing laughter. Referring to the age difference between himself and Vijay, Rajinikanth pointed out that there is a 25-year generation gap between them and said it would not look good if people tried to create a rivalry.
Despite his attempts to clarify matters, sections of social media criticised his choice of words, leading to renewed debates among fans of both stars.
Rajinikanth Reveals He Personally Wished Vijay
At the Dharman title launch event, reporters once again questioned Rajinikanth about Vijay, asking whether he had wished the Chief Minister on his birthday, especially since there was no public post on social media.
The superstar gave a brief but clear response, saying, “No, no. We had spoken,” indicating that he had personally called Vijay and wished him.
Focus Shifts to ‘Dharman’
Amid the controversies, Rajinikanth is gearing up for Dharman, one of the most anticipated projects in Tamil cinema. The film reunites him with Kamal Haasan, and director Ashwath Marimuthu has taken charge after several changes behind the scenes.
Even at 75, Rajinikanth remains one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema. But as he himself admitted, decades in the public eye have taught him that every word is scrutinised—and sometimes, even silence becomes controversial.
