Young Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi recently found himself at the center of attention following a heated on-field altercation during the India A vs Sri Lanka A match in the ongoing tri-nation series. The incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking speculation that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might take disciplinary action against the teenager.

However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has made it clear that the board is not directly involved in such matters and that any decision regarding penalties lies with the match officials.

What Happened on the Field?

The controversy unfolded during a tense Super Over after both India A and Sri Lanka A finished with identical scores of 265.

As emotions ran high, an exchange of words reportedly took place between 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage. According to reports, Halambage made provocative comments toward the Indian players following Sri Lanka’s Super Over victory.

The verbal exchange intensified when Halambage allegedly came very close to Sooryavanshi during the argument. The young Indian batter then pushed the Sri Lankan player, leading to a brief confrontation on the field.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate further, with players and officials stepping in before things got out of hand.

BCCI Breaks Silence

As videos of the incident spread online, rumors emerged suggesting that the BCCI was considering disciplinary action against Sooryavanshi.

Responding to the speculation, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the reports and clarified the board’s position.

He stated that incidents occurring during a match fall under the authority of the match referee and umpires, not the BCCI.

Saikia emphasized that the cricket board should not interfere in matters that are already governed by established match regulations and disciplinary procedures.

According to him, if any action is required, it is the responsibility of the match referee and match officials to assess the situation and take an appropriate call.

Match Referee Recommends Fines

Reports indicate that match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash reviewed the incident and recommended financial penalties for the players involved.

According to reports, both Sooryavanshi and Halambage could face fines amounting to 50 percent of their match fees due to their conduct during the confrontation.

India A captain Tilak Varma has also reportedly been recommended for a 30 percent fine following his lengthy argument with on-field umpires regarding the decision to conduct the Super Over under fading light conditions.

Since A-team matches do not come under the ICC’s disciplinary framework, the recommendations have reportedly been forwarded to both the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket for ratification.

Sri Lankan Players Also Face Action

The disciplinary spotlight has not been limited to Indian players.

Reports suggest that Sri Lanka A’s Vishen Halambage has also been sanctioned for allegedly provoking Indian batters with his comments after the Super Over.

Senior Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella has reportedly been cited separately for excessive appealing during the match.

Interestingly, Dickwella was also among the players who tried to calm the situation and prevent the Sooryavanshi-Halambage argument from turning into a physical confrontation.

A Learning Experience for a Young Star

At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is considered one of Indian cricket’s brightest young prospects. His performances have already generated excitement among fans and experts alike.

While the incident has drawn attention, many observers view it as a lesson in handling pressure and emotions at the highest level of competitive cricket.

Young players often find themselves in heated situations, especially during closely contested matches where emotions can run high.

Focus Shifts Back to Cricket

With the BCCI clarifying that it is not directly involved in the disciplinary process, attention is now on the final decision regarding the recommended sanctions.

For now, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly tensions can rise during intense contests and how important it is for players to maintain composure under pressure.

As one of India’s most promising young talents, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be eager to put the controversy behind him and let his performances on the field do the talking in the matches ahead.
