The makers of Peddi have decided to make significant changes to the film following criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma. After facing backlash on social media and from audiences, director Buchi Babu Sana has confirmed that a revised version of the movie will be released in theatres from June 17 with additional scenes featuring the actress.

The move comes after many viewers expressed disappointment over the way Janhvi’s character was presented in the film. Several scenes were criticised for focusing more on her physical appearance than her personality, with many calling the portrayal unnecessary and objectifying.

At a recent success meet, director Buchi Babu Sana revealed that the team has already re-edited the film to address the concerns.

“We have already edited the film. From this Wednesday, audiences will see the new version. We have added three scenes, including two important scenes related to Janhvi’s character and one featuring Jagapathi Babu,” the director said.

According to him, the newly added sequences will give Achiyyamma greater emotional depth and help audiences connect with her journey.

“I believe these scenes will take Janhvi’s character to another level. Viewers will understand her better after watching them,” he added.

The controversy began soon after Peddi was released on June 4, 2026. While the sports drama opened to an impressive box office collection of around ₹51 crore on its first day, discussions quickly shifted towards the treatment of the female lead.

Many viewers pointed out that the introduction scene of Achiyyamma focused heavily on her body before revealing her face. Another romantic sequence featuring Ram Charan’s character also drew criticism for what audiences described as suggestive camera angles rather than emotional storytelling.

A separate scene involving public harassment during an election campaign sparked even stronger reactions, with many social media users questioning the need for such moments and accusing the film of romanticising problematic behaviour.

As the criticism grew, Buchi Babu Sana issued a public apology.

“As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire and connect with people. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we sincerely apologise,” he said.

He also clarified that there was never any intention to disrespect the actress or the character and confirmed that the controversial portions had been removed.

Despite the debate surrounding the film, Peddi has continued to perform exceptionally well at the box office. Reports suggest that the film has crossed ₹307 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest Indian blockbusters of 2026.

The film features Ram Charan in the lead role, alongside Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Boman Irani and Divyenndu. The music has been composed by A.R. Rahman.

With the revised version set to hit theatres, the makers hope the additional scenes will offer a more balanced portrayal of Achiyyamma and allow audiences to appreciate the character beyond the controversy.
