In a dramatic and emotional day at the Asian Games wrestling selection trials in New Delhi, star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of representing India at the 2026 Asian Games came to an abrupt end after a narrow semifinal defeat to Meenakshi Goyat in the women’s 53kg category.
The 4-6 loss not only ended Vinesh’s campaign at the trials but also dealt a major blow to her hopes of making a successful return to international competition following a turbulent few years both on and off the wrestling mat.
A Comeback Bid Falls Short
The trials had already been surrounded by controversy before Vinesh even stepped onto the mat.
Earlier in the day, confusion erupted over her weight category. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials initially informed Vinesh that she would only be allowed to compete in the 50kg division because that had been her category in recent international events, including the Paris Olympics.
Vinesh strongly opposed the decision and argued that she should have the freedom to compete in the 53kg category. The dispute intensified before WFI president Sanjay Singh intervened and eventually allowed her to participate in the 53kg trials.
The decision gave Vinesh a chance to fight for an Asian Games berth, but her journey ended just one match short of the final.
A Gritty Battle Against Nishu
Before facing Meenakshi Goyat in the semifinals, Vinesh had to survive a major scare in the quarterfinals against Nishu.
After comfortably defeating Jyoti 7-1 in her opening bout, Vinesh encountered a determined and aggressive Nishu, who dominated the early stages of the match.
Nishu stormed into a 5-0 lead and nearly pinned Vinesh after executing a brilliant four-point throw. The experienced wrestler looked in serious trouble and appeared on the verge of elimination.
However, champions are often defined by their ability to fight back.
Drawing on years of international experience, Vinesh stayed calm and produced a powerful four-point move of her own in the second period. The turnaround shifted momentum completely.
The bout became increasingly tense, with technical issues and repeated challenges causing long interruptions. The breaks appeared to help Vinesh recover physically as she gradually fought her way back into contention.
Eventually, she edged ahead and secured a hard-fought victory, although the result sparked emotional scenes as Nishu left the mat in tears after her challenge was rejected.
Meenakshi Goyat Delivers the Decisive Blow
The semifinal against Meenakshi Goyat proved even tougher.
Meenakshi, who had already earned a reputation for upsetting top wrestlers after defeating Antim Panghal in previous selection events, once again demonstrated her ability to thrive under pressure.
The contest remained closely fought throughout, with neither wrestler able to establish complete control.
In the end, Meenakshi managed to hold her nerve and emerged with a 6-4 victory, knocking one of India’s most celebrated wrestlers out of contention.
The defeat effectively ended Vinesh’s hopes of earning a ticket to the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan later this year.
End of a Difficult Day
For Vinesh, the result was particularly painful because she had arrived at the trials determined to prove that she still belonged among India’s elite wrestlers.
Earlier while speaking to reporters, she had expressed confidence about her future and indicated that she intended to continue competing for at least two more years.
“I am here for at least two years,” she had said.
Yet despite her determination and experience, the long break from competitive wrestling appeared to have affected her endurance and sharpness during crucial moments.
While her technical skills and fighting spirit remained evident, younger opponents looked quicker and physically fresher throughout the competition.
Antim Panghal Stays in Contention
While Vinesh’s campaign ended in disappointment, another major name continued her march through the competition.
Antim Panghal produced a dominant performance, requiring only 34 seconds to defeat Tannu by technical superiority in her opening match.
She later secured another convincing victory over Mansi to advance further in the draw and remain firmly in contention for an Asian Games berth.
A New Chapter Awaits
Although Vinesh Phogat’s Asian Games dream has been put on hold, her fighting spirit remains unquestioned.
The former World Championship medalist has overcome numerous setbacks throughout her career—from injuries and defeats to administrative battles and personal challenges.
Saturday’s loss may mark the end of one campaign, but given her determination and resilience, few would be willing to rule out another comeback attempt.
For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Meenakshi Goyat, whose stunning victory has reshaped India’s women’s wrestling landscape and opened the door to a career-defining opportunity on the Asian Games stage.
