Hardik Pandya’s Absence Raises Questions as Mumbai Indians Struggle in IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya missed the team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4 due to reported back spasms, with Suryakumar Yadav stepping in as captain for the match. However, uncertainty continues over his availability for upcoming fixtures, including the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur.
Fitness concerns around Hardik Pandya
According to the team’s official statement, Hardik Pandya was “unwell with back spasms” and therefore unavailable for selection. While the issue was initially not considered serious enough to rule him out for an extended period, his absence from the squad’s travel group has added to speculation regarding his immediate return.
A report from Cricbuzz noted that Hardik was not seen with the Mumbai Indians squad at Mumbai airport as the team departed for Raipur. There has been no official clarification on whether he is expected to join the squad later or remain unavailable for the next fixture.
Teammate Ryan Rickelton also indicated limited knowledge about the severity of the issue, saying he was only informed on the day of the previous match and was unsure about the timeline of Hardik’s return.
Underwhelming season for the MI captain
Hardik Pandya’s performances this season have been below his usual standards. In eight matches, he has scored 146 runs at a strike rate of 136.45 and has not made a significant impact with the ball either. His form has coincided with Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent campaign, adding pressure on both the player and the leadership group.
Mumbai Indians’ difficult season
The five-time champions find themselves in a challenging position, placed 9th in the points table with just three wins from ten matches. The team’s struggles have sparked broader discussions about structural and leadership changes within the squad.
The transition from long-time captain Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya was intended to mark a new phase for the franchise. However, the shift has not yet translated into consistent results on the field. While Rohit’s tenure was built on stability and tactical continuity, the current season has exposed gaps in execution and momentum.
Key players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have also been part of a campaign that has failed to gain traction, despite recent international success in other formats.
What lies ahead
With several matches remaining in the league stage, Mumbai Indians will be hoping for clarity on Hardik Pandya’s fitness and a swift turnaround in form. His return—both as captain and all-rounder—could prove crucial in stabilising a season that has so far fallen short of expectations.
For now, the franchise faces a familiar IPL challenge: finding consistency at the right time to stay alive in the competition.
