Abhishek Sharma produced a breathtaking innings as Sunrisers Hyderabad piled up a massive total against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 clash, later reflecting on his approach and philosophy of playing with freedom after a record-breaking century.
Batting at the top alongside Travis Head, Abhishek initially planned to dominate the powerplay. However, he later revealed that the pitch conditions forced a change in strategy. The surface played slower than expected, making stroke-making more challenging than anticipated.
Speaking after the match, Abhishek admitted that judging a par score was difficult until both teams had batted. He emphasised that adaptability became crucial once the pitch behaviour became clear.
“We had a plan, Head and I wanted to make use of the powerplay. But the wicket was slow, so we had to adjust,” Abhishek said. “We don’t know the par score till both innings have been batted.”
The young batter also credited the team management and leadership group for giving him the freedom to express himself without fear of failure. He highlighted how backing from the captain and coaches has been a key factor in his consistent aggressive approach.
“The support from the captain, coach and management gives you the freedom to go and express yourself,” he added.
In a candid remark that quickly caught attention online, Abhishek explained his mindset by linking it to his roots. “I play like this for Punjab, and Punjabi players like to play freely,” he said, a statement that resonated widely with fans for its honesty and confidence.
His explosive knock saw him smash 135 runs off just 68 balls, including 9 fours and 10 towering sixes. He reached his century in just 47 deliveries, marking his second IPL hundred and one of the most destructive innings of the season.
The performance also earned him his seventh Player of the Match award in just 81 IPL appearances, making him the most decorated Indian player in that category for SRH, surpassing Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
With this milestone, Abhishek also joined an elite list of Indian batters with nine T20 centuries, equalling Virat Kohli. He now stands among the top T20 century-makers globally, behind names like Chris Gayle, Babar Azam, and David Warner.
SRH skipper Ishan Kishan was full of praise for Abhishek’s innings, calling it the defining performance of the match. He also credited Heinrich Klaasen for finishing strongly and maintaining the momentum in the death overs.
Defending a massive 242/2, SRH’s bowlers backed up the batting heroics with a disciplined performance, led by Eshan Malinga, who picked up a four-wicket haul to seal a 47-run victory.
The result further strengthened SRH’s position in the tournament, but it was Abhishek Sharma’s fearless batting and honest post-match reflection that truly captured the spotlight.
