Axar Patel, captain of Delhi Capitals, showed remarkable sportsmanship after his team’s 47-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2026 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, acknowledging the brilliance of opposition batters rather than blaming his bowlers.

Chasing a mammoth target of 243, Delhi Capitals were undone by a record-breaking batting performance from SRH opener Abhishek Sharma, who struck a sensational second IPL century. He was well supported by a blistering cameo from Heinrich Klaasen, as Sunrisers posted a dominant 242/2.

Despite DC’s disciplined bowling effort in patches, the sheer intensity of SRH’s batting proved too much to handle. The chase never fully took off for Delhi, who lost wickets at regular intervals and struggled to build partnerships under pressure.

Speaking after the match, Axar Patel praised the opposition for their exceptional execution and made it clear that there was little his bowlers could have done differently on the day.

“If someone bats that well and their execution is not lacking, credit must be given for such a performance,” Axar said. “Considering the way Klaasen also batted from the other side, it’s not the bowler’s fault. If you execute your plans and still get hit for good shots, there is nothing more you can do.”

Axar also backed his team’s overall approach, suggesting that DC should not make panic changes despite the defeat. He pointed out that the team has been performing well in both departments and that the high-scoring nature of the pitch made it an outlier performance rather than a structural issue.

“Right now it doesn’t feel like changing the team,” he said. “We are batting well and bowling well. On a wicket like this, sometimes you just have an off day and need to move on.”

While Delhi Capitals showed brief resistance through their middle order, they were unable to recover from early setbacks. SRH’s bowlers, led by Eshan Malinga, who picked up a four-wicket haul, ensured the chase never gained momentum.

The win highlighted SRH’s all-round dominance — a powerful batting display followed by disciplined bowling — while DC were left to reflect on missed opportunities in both the Powerplay and fielding lapses that allowed Abhishek Sharma to flourish.

Despite the loss, Axar Patel’s composed and respectful assessment stood out, underlining the importance of acknowledging exceptional performances even in defeat.
