Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant fielding effort in the IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians has drawn high praise from one of cricket’s greatest fielders, Jonty Rhodes, who called himself the “grandfather of fielding” while applauding the modern evolution of athleticism in cricket.

The moment of brilliance came when Iyer produced a spectacular boundary-line intervention to help dismiss Hardik Pandya. His sharp awareness and athletic execution played a key role in Punjab Kings restricting Mumbai Indians to 195/6 in their 20 overs. Punjab then dominated the chase, finishing the target comfortably in just 16.3 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Rhodes Hails Modern Fielding Standards

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Rhodes shared an emotional and reflective post, praising Iyer’s effort and acknowledging how far fielding standards have evolved since his playing days. Known as the “father of modern fielding,” Rhodes humorously remarked that the current generation of players has elevated the game so much that he now feels like the “grandfather of fielding.”

He highlighted Iyer’s timing, anticipation, and boundary awareness as examples of how fielding has become a decisive factor in modern cricket.

Evolution of Boundary Fielding

Rhodes also reflected on his coaching experiences, particularly during his time with Mumbai Indians, where he observed players like Kieron Pollard and Glenn Maxwell redefining fielding standards with athletic “airborne saves” near the boundary ropes.

He noted that earlier cricket eras focused more on inner-circle fielding, while modern T20 cricket demands exceptional skills in boundary prevention, diving saves, and turning sixes into singles.

Punjab Kings Continue Winning Momentum

The victory marked another strong performance for Punjab Kings, who extended their unbeaten run to five matches in IPL 2026 and climbed to the top of the points table.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians continued to struggle, suffering their fourth consecutive defeat of the season.

Iyer’s fielding masterclass, however, remained the standout moment of the match—earning admiration not just from fans but also from one of the greatest fielders the sport has ever seen.
