Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has finally opened up on his decision to skip the Indian Premier League and instead feature in the Pakistan Super League, shedding light on the personal and professional reasons behind the move.
Moeen, who recently played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2025 IPL season, chose not to register for the next edition of the tournament and instead signed up for the PSL, where he is representing the Karachi Kings.
“Shorter tournament, more balance,” says Moeen
Speaking on a podcast, Moeen explained that multiple factors influenced his decision, including workload management, family time, and playing opportunities.
At 38, the veteran cricketer said he is focused on extending his career while still enjoying regular game time. He pointed out that the PSL’s shorter schedule was a major advantage, allowing him to balance cricket with personal commitments more effectively.
Limited chances in IPL influenced decision
Moeen also reflected on his recent IPL experience, stating that limited opportunities played a key role in his decision. He revealed that during the last season, he featured in only a few matches and rarely got the chance to bat, which affected his rhythm and involvement in games.
For a player nearing the latter stages of his career, consistent playing time has become a priority, something he felt the PSL could offer more reliably.
“I just want to play and enjoy my cricket”
The former England all-rounder emphasized that his decision was not about comparisons between leagues but about personal satisfaction and staying active on the field.
He also expressed a long-standing desire to experience the PSL environment, noting that scheduling clashes between the two leagues often make it difficult for players to participate in both.
Financial and professional balance
Moeen is reportedly earning around ₹2.14 crore for his stint with Karachi Kings, but he stressed that financial considerations were not the primary factor behind his choice.
Instead, he reiterated that enjoying cricket, staying match-fit, and spending time with family were at the heart of his decision.
A career-focused shift
As Moeen Ali continues his T20 journey, his move highlights the growing reality for global cricketers—choosing between competing leagues based on form, fitness, opportunity, and personal priorities.
For now, his focus remains on contributing to Karachi Kings and making the most of the PSL season while extending his playing career on his own terms.
