Mumbai’s suburban rail network has taken a major step towards safer commuting with the arrival of its first non-AC closed-door local train rake at the Kurla Carshed of Central Railway. The rake, manufactured by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, reached Mumbai on Monday evening, marking an important milestone in efforts to modernise the city’s lifeline.
The introduction of closed-door coaches is being viewed as a significant safety upgrade for the Mumbai Suburban Railway, which carries millions of passengers every day and has long struggled with overcrowding and safety concerns. Until now, open-door travel has been a common and risky feature of daily commuting, often leading to accidents involving passengers standing near or at train doors.
Officials believe that the new rake design will help minimise such incidents by preventing passengers from hanging outside moving trains, a practice that has resulted in numerous fatalities over the years. The closed-door system is expected to create a more controlled and safer travel environment, particularly during peak hours when crowding is at its highest.
At the same time, the development is part of a broader modernisation effort aimed at upgrading suburban rail services in one of the busiest commuter networks in the world. The transition, however, may require commuters to adapt to new boarding and travel patterns, especially those accustomed to open-door airflow during congested journeys.
Despite the adjustment period, authorities view the move as a long-overdue reform that prioritises passenger safety over traditional commuting habits. Further testing and deployment schedules are expected to be announced before the rake is introduced into regular passenger service.
As Mumbai continues to expand, the upgrade signals a shift towards safer, more structured suburban travel, reinforcing the rail network’s role as the backbone of the city’s daily mobility.
