Asha Bhosle’s Old Remark on Sunidhi Chauhan Resurfaces as Nation Mourns Legendary Singer
Mumbai — The nation continues to mourn the loss of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away in Mumbai at the age of 92 following multi-organ failure. Known for a career spanning over eight decades, she reportedly recorded nearly 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages, leaving behind one of the richest legacies in Indian music history.
As tributes pour in from across the world, an old interview of Asha Bhosle has resurfaced, drawing renewed attention to her admiration for contemporary singer Sunidhi Chauhan.
In the throwback conversation, Asha Bhosle was asked about her favourite modern-day singer. She had praised Sunidhi Chauhan’s versatility and distinctive voice, noting that she stood apart from others in the industry.
“I like Sunidhi Chauhan. She can sing all kinds of songs. Very nice voice—she has a different voice. Everyone else copies Lata ji; she doesn’t. That sounds good to me,” Asha Bhosle had said, referring to her elder sister and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
The remark has since gone viral, with fans revisiting the bond of respect and musical lineage between generations of Indian playback singers. Many have also pointed to Sunidhi Chauhan as one of the modern voices often associated with carrying forward Asha Bhosle’s experimental and versatile style.
While Sunidhi Chauhan has not yet issued a public statement or obituary post following Asha Bhosle’s passing, tributes from the music, film, political, and sports worlds continue to pour in.
Meanwhile, arrangements for the final rites of Asha Bhosle are underway in Mumbai with full state honours. Her mortal remains were brought to her residence in Lower Parel, where fans and admirers are gathering to pay their last respects. The body will remain there until the afternoon before being taken for cremation at the Shivaji Park Crematorium.
Prominent personalities including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, actor Tabu, and veteran actress Asha Parekh have visited her residence to offer condolences. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is also expected to attend the funeral.
Earlier, Asha Bhosle had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital due to exhaustion and a chest infection, as confirmed by her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle. Despite treatment efforts, she passed away on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of grief from across the country.
As India bids farewell to one of its most iconic voices, her words and music continue to echo—celebrating a life that shaped the sound of generations.
