Nation Mourns Kargil War Hero Sonam Wangchuk, ‘Lion of Ladakh,’ at 61

India is mourning the loss of decorated Kargil War hero Sonam Wangchuk, who passed away at the age of 61 following a reported heart attack. A recipient of the prestigious Maha Vir Chakra, he was widely revered for his extraordinary bravery during the Kargil War.

Fondly known as the “Lion of Ladakh,” Wangchuk earned this title for his exceptional leadership and courage in Operation Vijay, where Indian forces successfully reclaimed strategic positions during the conflict.

The Indian Army expressed deep sorrow over his passing, honoring him as a brave soldier whose service and sacrifice will continue to inspire generations of Indians.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute, describing Wangchuk as a “proud son of Ladakh.” He praised the late soldier’s unwavering commitment, gallantry, and dedication to the nation.
