₹118 Crore Spent, Returns Yet to Come: IPL 2026’s Top Earners Struggle for Impact

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has already delivered thrilling contests and breakout performances, but one surprising trend has emerged in the early stages—many of the tournament’s highest-paid players are yet to justify their hefty price tags.

With most teams having played three matches so far (except Royal Challengers Bengaluru), the spotlight has turned to the top earners from the auction. A combined ₹125.20 crore was spent on the top 10 players, but barring Ravi Bishnoi, the returns have been underwhelming.

Big money, slow starts

If Bishnoi’s ₹7.20 crore deal is excluded—given his impressive performances so far—the remaining nine top earners account for a staggering ₹118 crore investment. Yet, none of them have made a significant impact in the opening phase of the tournament.

While it is still early in a long competition like the IPL, the initial trend has raised questions about form, fitness, and team combinations.

A closer look at the top earners

Cameron Green (KKR – ₹25.20 crore)
The most expensive player of the season has had a quiet start. Batting in a key top-order role, Green has scored just 56 runs in four matches at an average of 18.67. His bowling has also been limited, with figures of 1/28 in two overs in his first outing.

Matheesha Pathirana (KKR – ₹18 crore)
The Sri Lankan pacer has been sidelined due to a calf injury sustained during the T20 World Cup. Though he has resumed bowling in the nets, his return date remains uncertain.

Kartik Sharma (CSK – ₹14.20 crore)
The young batter has struggled to find consistency, registering scores of 18, 1, and 6 in his three appearances.

Prashant Veer (CSK – ₹14.20 crore)
Another big investment for Chennai Super Kings, Veer showed promise with a 43 against RCB but has yet to deliver consistently.

Liam Livingstone (SRH – ₹13 crore)
The explosive all-rounder has featured in just one match so far, scoring 14 runs, and is yet to make a meaningful impact.

Mustafizur Rahman (KKR – ₹9.20 crore)
In a major setback, Mustafizur has been ruled out of IPL 2026 before even taking the field.

Josh Inglis (LSG – ₹8.60 crore)
The wicketkeeper-batter is yet to make his debut this season.

Auqib Nabi (DC – ₹8.40 crore)
The promising pacer from Jammu and Kashmir is also awaiting his opportunity in the playing XI.

Jason Holder (GT – ₹7.20 crore)
The experienced all-rounder has not featured in any match so far.

The lone bright spot

Amid the struggles, Ravi Bishnoi has stood out as the only top earner delivering on expectations. The Rajasthan Royals spinner has picked up seven wickets in three matches, showcasing consistency and control.

Too early to judge?

Despite the underwhelming returns, it would be premature to write off these players. The IPL is known for dramatic turnarounds, where a single performance can change narratives.

Form, fitness, and opportunities often fluctuate in the early stages, and many of these players have proven track records at the highest level.

A season waiting to unfold

As IPL 2026 progresses, franchises will be hoping their big investments begin to pay off. For now, the gap between price tag and performance remains a talking point—but in a tournament known for unpredictability, fortunes can change in a matter of games.

The coming weeks will reveal whether these high-profile names can rise to the occasion or if IPL 2026 will be remembered for its unexpected heroes instead.
