David Warner Reveals He Had “Three Glasses of Wine” Before Drink-Driving Incident in Sydney

Former Australian opener David Warner has provided new details in his ongoing drink-driving case in Sydney. According to a report by NewsCorp, Warner admitted to police that he had consumed alcohol shortly before being stopped in the eastern suburbs of the city.

The report states that Warner had been drinking with a friend and consumed three glasses of wine before attempting to drive back to his residence in Maroubra. Authorities intercepted him during a random breath-testing operation, which returned a positive reading. His blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.104—more than twice the legal limit. Warner was subsequently taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with a mid-range drink-driving offence. He is scheduled to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on May 7.

The incident comes while Warner continues to feature prominently in franchise cricket, despite stepping away from international duties in 2024. He is currently leading Karachi Kings in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 and had briefly returned to Australia during a tournament break. Warner had recently scored a half-century in Lahore on April 2.

Warner’s prolific domestic T20 season also highlights his ongoing cricketing form. In the Big Bash League, he averaged 86.6 for Sydney Thunder and earned a place as captain in the tournament’s team of the season. The franchise has declined to comment on the drink-driving matter.

One of Australia’s most accomplished modern-day batters, Warner amassed 8,786 runs in 112 Tests at an average above 44, including a career-best unbeaten 335 against Pakistan. Since retiring from Test cricket, he has also taken up commentary duties.

If convicted, the charge could impact Warner’s commercial engagements and professional commitments. The incident adds to previous controversies in his career, including the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, which had already tested his public image and disciplinary record.

This latest episode underscores the scrutiny former international cricketers face, both on and off the field, even as they continue to excel in franchise tournaments.
